Joachim Conti, Antonio Conti early 1900's
Hi everyone,
My great great grandfather Joachim Conti immigrated to Gettysburg PA with his French wife. They had 2 children and sailed from La Havre France in 1912. We just found out he had a brother Antonio Conti, who lived in Altoona PA and Cambridge MA. Have only been able to track them to Cambridge MA via the 1930's census. Don't know what happened after that. We've never had any contact with them.
Joachim Conti-husband
Louise Conti-wife
Andre Conti-son
Lili Conti (Hummel)-daughter
Looking for;
Antonio Conti-brother
Christina-wife
Harry-son
Albert-son
J or T ulco-son?
Joseph-son
Geraldine-daughter
Cinderella-daughter
Mollie-daughter
Have found Cinderellas SS index papers but that is about it. Don't know where they came from in Italy. Ellis Island's writting is something like Carbare or Coitare?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Joachim Conti, Antonio Conti early 1900's
Thank you.
Yes, they came a few months apart and settled in Gettysburg PA. They were a very visable family in Gettysburg on Hanover St from 1912 -1940. Which is where I have done most of my research. Joachim was a stone cutter, tailor and fruit stand owner.
Joachim died in 1931 in Gettysburg, he was 60. Andre died in 1940, he was 35. And Louise died in 1953, she was 75. My grandmother was married to Andre and told us there were no other Conti family members in the USA. She would just write people out of her life. Then I saw Joachim's obit in Gettysburg and found out he had a brother in Cambridge MA.
I must do more research and figure out the French/Italian connection, why Gettysburg and figure out the Italian birthplace Coitare?

Re: Joachim Conti, Antonio Conti early 1900's
After my great great grandfather Joachim Conti (DOB approx. 1974) died in Dec 29, 1931 in Gettysburg Pa. papers were sent to the Italian and French consulates in Philadelphia, PA. Why would they have done this. I saw a paper that said a letter was sent to these 2 consulates. I did not make a copy of this statement but will do so in the future. In the Gettysburg Times it states that he was naturalized in 1920. I have not been able to find the nat. papers though. The 1930 census states he was NA. and his wife and son as well.
Joachim/Gioacchino Conti came to the USA from La Havre France in 1905, 1910 and finally in 1912 to live. His family joined him 2 mo. later in 1912. Louise(wife), Andre(son) and Liliy(daughter) was born here in Jan. 1913.
Thank you for any help you may have! Thanks VaDeb for your help.

Re: Joachim Conti, Antonio Conti early 1900's
1. Regarding statement in the newspaper. Was the statement that he had been naturalized in 1920 written in an obit? Information contained in an obit isn't always accurate. Perhaps the informant thought he had been naturalized. I use obits as a guide, or pointer to primary sources. I would also search for a naturaliztion record after reading this. But, if the 1930 census says he is still an alien, this should be a more reliable source. The information came from (or should have) him or a family member.
Edit: I misread your post. The 1930 census lists him as NA or naturalized. Thus this does fit with the newspaper article. There must be naturalization papers somewhere. YOu can file a FOIA (freedom of information request) with the INS and get a copy of his naturalization papers. Have you tried the National ARchives for the record?
2. Been thinking about the report of the death to the consulate. In Italian vital records that I have gone through I have found records from the US. Example a marriage record from the church in NJ filed with the the Italian recods. I don't remember if it was with the Atti Diversi or in the Marriage acts themself. Perhaps the family felt it was important to report his death to the town in Italy he was from. Just speculation on my part. Hopefully Suanj will have an answer to this.

Hi There,
About the Naturalization Records, per the 1920 Census, it stated he Petitioned to become Naturalized. Per the 1930 Census, he was already Naturalized.
Call Adams County to find out how much it costs to get copies of the Naturalization Records and where you're supposed to write. Sometimes the Naturalization Records are held in the Archives of the County or the Historical Society of the County.
Register of Wills
Adams County Courthouse
111 Baltimore Street
Gettysburg, PA 17325-2312

Adams County Historical Society
111 N. West Confederate Ave.
P.O. Box 4325
Gettysburg, PA

I hope some of this helps,
Trish
