Desimone (Desmone)

Post by JCDesimone »

Hello to all!!

I am curious about my great-grandfather and great-grandmother and to see if there is any remaining family in Italy. My great grandfathers name was Sam Desimone but on our family tree it is notated as "Desmone"...no idea if the "i" was purposely changed or lost somewhere along the way.He was born Dec 29, 1892. All I have heard from the few remaining family is that our family came from Sardinia. Sam married Beatrice Pagel in Italy and then came to the US sometime after. Together they had 8 children in Michigan (the 6th being my grandfather Norman James Desimone. He doesn't speak much about his parents. So long story short, if anyone knows any info about this branch of the family tree please feel free to pass along!

Graci!!

1930 census--shows Sam's birthplace as New York? and was a veteran of WWI.

Wow!! Thank you all so much in passing the info along and helping me. Its so amazing to see such history. I am curious as to why Sam would state on the 1920's census that he is from Italy (immigrated in 1907) but change that on the 1930's census. I do know that when they immigrated the reason we havent much info is because when they came over they were now "Americans". No italian language was allowed and so forth. I am still not certain if Sam came from
Sardinia or not. And as for the WW1 Vet status that is new to me as well. Hmmmm....very interesting.

The 1920 census might be for your Sam DeSimone. No way to know for sure at this point.

The birthplace of New York on the 1930 census could be incorrect; and he could have been a WWI vet in either the US or Italian army. If he served in the Italian army, he would have emigrated after the war.

Based on the Michigan marriage record, here's a wild guess manifest for Sam (Salvatore) with parents and siblings. lines 17 and following.
Salvatore born about 1891
Father: Giuseppe (Joseph)
Mother: Benedetta (Beatrice on the marriage record?) Latino
Brother and sister: Santi and Maria
Last residence: San Marco d'Alunzio, Messina, Sicily

Your Sam Desimone might be Santi not Salvatore on the manifest above although the approximate year of birth is off. Check the naturalization markings in the occupation column on the manifest for Santi. The 8 stands for Detroit naturaliztion office.

Michigan Naturalization Index Card
Name: Santen Desimone
Birth Date: 29 Dec 1892
State: Michigan
Locality, Court: Detroit, District Court
Feb 4 1941

again me and this record is abt your Sam, also if the first name and birthyear is different:
United States, World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 for Santen Desimone

Name: Santen Desimone
Event: Military
Event Date: 1942
Event Place: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
Residence: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 29 Dec 1889
Film Number: 1670015
Digital Folder Number: 4673431
Image Number: 05074
wife: Beatrice DeSimone

Image

so the first name is Santino( =Santo/Santi) De Simone and born in 1889....
