Help finding records for Pietro Gatto born 1887

Post by tcrawford246 »

Pietro Gatto is my great-grandfather and I have hit a wall trying to find records about him in Italy. He was born in 1887 possibly in Cerratina, Pescara, Abruzzo. I can't find any record of his mother or father and my family does not remember him ever mentioning them. Any help would be great.

You didn't mention... did he ever travel to or live in the US? Have you tried writing a letter to the comune and ordering records? What have you done so far to try and locate anything about him?

Thank you everyone for all your help. Here is some more information that I forgot to mention before: He lived immigrated to the United States and he lived in Brockway, Pennsylvania. Also, his full birthday is Februrary 12, 1887. I'm pretty sure that the first Pietro Gatto that suanj found is him and I don't know if he ever traveled back to Italy or not. Also, I'm not sure if he had any siblings, as I said before my family said that he never really talked about his life in Italy. I did my best trying to find him using ancestry.com and I found him in the census and his WW1 draft card. That is pretty much the only information that I know about him other than what my mom remembers and that doesn't really pertain to tracking him down in historical records. As for ordering records, I have no idea how to do that and if that was not where he was born would they still have records?

I believe that the birth place is San Pietro in Amantea; on 1905 ship's manifest, the last residence is wrote "Cerrati" really is Terrati, hamlet of Lago town, no far from San Pietro in Amantea..

map:

just a my suggestion..

Thank you suanj for finding more information. I have some new information that may or may not help. According to the ship manifest from the Ellis Island website, Pietro was meeting his cousin Gaetano Caruso. Listed above Pietro on the manifest are several other people with the last name Caruso and they were all coming from the same place. I'm not sure if this will help when searching for Pietro. I don't know if the Caruso's are on related on his mother or father's side. My grandmother (Pietro's daughter) always thought that Pietro's mother was a prostitute. Also, no one know's his mother's name so that complicates things more.

Thank you!
Yes, in the ship's manifest of 1905, the Carusos and others that joining at Gaetano Caruso in PA, they coming from Amantea; Amantea is a town near San Pietro in Amantea; also the name in line 13 coming from San Pietro; only Pietro last residence is Cerrati(Terrati) but by WWI and WWII the birthplace is San Pietro ( San Pietro in Amantea), so this is the right birthplace and Terrati was the last residence in 1905....

I have searched for Gaetano Caruso in Brockwayville (the name of the town before it was shortened to Brockway) Pennsylvania and I can't find him or his family at all. This was the cousin that was picking up my great grandfather from Ellis Island. Can anybody please help me find records of Gaetano Caruso? He might be the key to finding out more about my great grandfather. Also, maybe this information with help too: I was looking through ship manifests on ellisisland.org and there were two men Saverio Bruno and Francesco Bruno who were coming from Amantea were also coming to Brockwayville and being picked up by their brother-in-law Gaetano Caruso. Thank You.

The best way for to find more,
is to search in TERRATI civil records by LDS microfilms:
Registri dello stato civile di Terrati (Cosenza), 1810-1910 Terrati (Cosenza). Ufficio dello stato civile
Births, marriages, banns, deaths, marriage documents, citizenship records.
