Passenger List question

Post by tomtst »

The ship passenger list below lists some given names beginning with Ma or M. What does that stand for? Line 3 looks like Ma Antonia Gambale I think that is the same person I have listed as Maria Gambale. Is Ma just an abreviation for Maria?

Hi Tom!
yes, it means Maria, as it is very common to give names composed with Maria followed by any other. You will often find it written that way, with an "M" and an "a" on top.

Hi Tom,

You might want to refer to this link to Trafford Cole's book...
Page 214 gives first name abbreviations found in genealogical records (and ship manifests :) )
