Pioda family from Domodossola, Novara, Italy

Post by jdbaxter »

My great grandfather, according to Ancestry.com was born in Domodossola, Novara, Italy. His full name was John Defendente Pioda. He married a Selika Muegge. He immigrated to the U.S. around about 1870. I am trying to locate the names of his father and any siblings he might of had that stayed in Italy or came to the U.S. Would the best bet be to see if I could get his berth certificate from Italy? How difficult is it to do this?
Thanks

Hi,
just few things. If your ancestor immigrated to US in 1870 can we assume he was about 15-20 years old? This means he was born around 1850-1855 or even before if older than 20. Town Halls in Norther Italy started to keep birth records in 1866 (after Unification of Italy). Before 1866, births, deaths and marriages were recorded by parishes. So you can make your request writing to the address that Tessa posted for Domodossola Town Hall but I would suggest that you write to the parish too. Here is the name of the priest and the address:

Reverendo Don Renzo Cozzi
Parrocchia Ss. Gervasio e Protasio
Via Mons. Pellanda, 6
28845 Domodossola (VB)
Italy

Start your letter with:

Reverendo Padre,

.........

Domodossola was in the past in the province of Novara but is now in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (often shortened as VB). About your ancestor's first name, John is not an Italian name, I assume it's the translation of Giovanni. So ask for Giovanni Defendente Pioda. It might look obvious but you never know.

Good luck!!

Ada is right on about the civil records. Church would be your best bet.

Thank you Marty, I was in a hurry this morning and didn't have time to write a form letter.

I don't have an Ancestry subscription but tried to find something on John D Pioda in US and this is the result:

John D. Pioda married Selika Muegge on 15 March 1893, in Fulton, Georgia;

A transcription of a 1910 Census from Family Search website
name: John D Pioda
birthplace: Italy
relationship to head of household: Self
residence: Atlanta Ward 3, Fulton, Georgia
marital status: Married
race : White
gender: Male
immigration year: 1870
father's birthplace: Italy
mother's birthplace: Italy
family number: 220
page number: 10
Household Gender Age
John D Pioda M 68y
spouse Selika Pioda F 38y
child L John Pioda M 16y
child Elsie O Pioda F 9y

and a 1920 Census

name: John D Pioda
residence: , Fulton, Georgia
estimated birth year: 1850
age: 70
birthplace: Italy
relationship to head of household: Self
gender: Male
race: White
marital status: Married
father's birthplace: Italy
mother's birthplace: Italy
film number: 1820251
digital folder number: 4300109
image number: 01067
sheet number: 5
Household Gender Age
John D Pioda M 70y
spouse S?Lika Pioda F 48y
child L John Pioda M 25y
child Elsie Pioda F 19y
Eugenie Muegge F 70y

Eugenie Muegge, listed in the above 1920 census, is Selika's mother and was widowed. She was Italian born to Italian father and German mother.

In case you are interested, Selika Muegge Pioda (originally Mügge, when "ü" cannot be used it's substituted with "ue" in German, so surname in US might be Muegge or Mugge) was born in New York about 1872. Selika's father John Muegge/Mugge was born in Germany.
Among marriages in New York I found a John Muegge who married Eugenia Giacomini on 22 March 1868. John Muegge/Mugge was widowed (or divorced) and already had 3 children when married Eugenia.

Here is the image for the 1920 Census that Ada posted for you above :-)

It appears that children were born in Pennsylvania (L John) and Georgia (Elise).
John lists his immigration as 1868, and naturalization as 1873...

And for the 1910 Census...
