Records from Santa Maria Valdisotta

Post by jlschu58 »

My grandfather, Luigi Jacomo Lumina was born in 1890 in the village of Santa Maria Valdisotta. I am trying to find out more information about his parents and siblings. My mother thinks that her paternal grandfather was married twice, and thinks there were children from both marriages, but does not know the specifics. This is a pretty remote village in the Alps, and was wondering how I might go about obtaining this kind of information. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Welcome to the website
Santa Maria is a frazione (suburb) of Valdisotto so all the civil records would be held in the comune di Valdisotto.
When did Luigi come over to the USA and how old was he was he married then ?
With a little more info we can show you your best route to find info

Santa Maria is a frazione (hamlet) of Valdisotto in Sondrio Province, Region of Lombardia

The LDS Family History Library holds microfilms of the civil registrations (births, marriages, deaths, etc.) for Valdisotto (1866-1929) which you can rent and view...

Thank you so much for all your responses.

He immigrated in 1912 at the age of 21 and was single at that time. He married my grandmother in 1922. She was born in Isolaccia, Lombardia, Italy. His church still stands in Santa Maria, but my grandmother's burnt down and records were lost.

In reading some of the information in this forum, I was feeling discouraged as it sounded like obtaining records/information can be quite challenging and take a long time. If I were to write to the comune of Valdisotto, would I need to have them written in Italian? And what would I expect to find on birth records? Perhaps this is in your link Tessa, as I haven't opened them yet, so please disregard if it further explained there. I will also write to the other Lumina families you had listed - thanks so much for that infomration.

Both your grandparents birth records would have been recorded in Valdisotto for both Isolaccia and Santa Maria are hamlets (small villages of the main town) of the town of Valdisotto like Tessa said in the above post.
Church records of Isolaccia might have been burned but the civil records have been recorded by the Family History Library on microfilm which a copy is given to the town for letting them film the civil records

Hello, I am from the Giovanni Ponti family and it lists we are from Valdisotta. I see someone else in the family was on here a few years ago researching the Lumina families. They are cousins of mine. I am just starting out learning about Italian geneology. My great grandfater Giovanni was married to a Christina Zina. She was born in Livingo, Italy. I know they had three of their children there before my GG came to the United States I think in 1902. Then sent for his wife and three children. There was an Anna, born in 1899, Lena born in 1900 and Mello or Milo, born in 1902. It says they were born in Valdidentro Italy
When he came to the United States he came with his best friend I have been told by the last name of Ponty. The ship they came on was "La Champagne" I think. Came into Ellis Island New York. I just am throwint this out there to see if anyone answers this post. I have no idea what I am doing.

Any help would sure be appreciated. I am interested in any kind of information regarding my family.
Thanks so much.
