Need Help locating Family Censuses

Post by Mardi »

I am in need of your help.I have tried looking for Nicholas Cuccia born 1868, Corleone, Sicily, married - Leoluchina (Laura) Calamusa in 1896, Corleone, Scily. Came to the USA around the early 1900's. Settle in Louisiana. There children were:
Mary born 1897, Corleone, Scily
Catherine born: 1900, all the rest of the children were born in Louisiana
Philippa (Fannie) born 1903
Frank born 1906,
Rose born 1907
Stella born 1910
Marie born 1911
Manuel born 1913
Luke born 1918
Joseph born 1922
I cannot find any information on the family. I have looked for the 1900 thru 1930 Census. Also looked for the ship Nicholas, Laura and Mary arrived and could not find any information. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Tessa78, for finding the family in the 1940 Census. I have search for sometime to locate the family in some of the earlier census. It seems as thou they were/are under a different name, with all the kids something should show up.
I was looking under Louisiana Census, will check out Texas.
Thank you so much.....
P.S. Information you sent on Stella....that is the correct one...Thanks

Hello Mardi :-)

Glad the records were the correct family!

Here is another record I've found. Not sure if this is the family, but there are clues that it MAY be correct.

1920 US CENSUS

Family is living in Orleans County, Louisiana.
Head of family is "Cline" Cuccia, age 49 and a widow. Born in Italy and arrived about 1896. I'm thinking that the first name could be a misunderstanding, given an Italian accent, of Leoluchina. She is working as a cotton picker.
Oldest child is Carmelite - age 19 (could this be your "Catherine" born in 1900?) place of birth is Louisiana. She works in a bag factory
Frank, a son, is listed as age 16 (which would be right for your Frank) and his birth is listed as Louisiana (not Texas :? ) and he works as a Truck driver.
Now... listed also is daughter "Mary Michell" who is a widow as well, and her two children; Philip and Nick (first named after paternal grandfather, and second named after maternal grandfather, Nicola Cuccia? who were born in Texas. Mary's age is 37 - which would mean that she was born when her mother was 12... not impossible... There are other possibilities for this discrepancy in ages - that they are just inaccurate, etc.
You probably noticed that the other children are not listed. Possibly they are with relatives, in a home, etc.

That all being said, I would keep this record for the possibility.

They are toward the bottom of page
Image

EDITED: to add record

SAME families in 1910 Census - on same street (Esata St.) in New Orleans.
Top of page - Cuccia, Caroline, widow, age 39
With children:
Antoinette, 19 (birth about 1891)
Joseph, 18 (birth about 1892)
Lena, 16 (birth about 1894)
Jacob, 13 (birth about 1897)
Carrie, 10 (Catherine? - birth about 1900)
Frank, 7 (birth about 1907)
BELOW them...
Mary Michel, age 23 (making birth in 1887)
Is is listed as married 6 years, with 2 children:
Philip, 5 - and Nicholas, 2

The older chldren, given their ages, would have probably moved out by the next census, so you would not see them.

Have you found a ship manfest? It appears that Nicola and Leoluchina may have arrived closer to 1886-88...

Hey T :D !
I'm so glad I could help.
Interesting that Laura and two other folks have 'Florida' as a birth location.
So far no luck on a ship manifest...

Tessa78 and Valarie, you guys are just awesome...finally found the 1930 Census on the Family (that is them)....Nicholas passed away in 1932.
Tessa78, the Census on Caroline Cuccia, was and is very usefull, it open another door, hope it will help find the Ship manifest that Nick and Laura arrived on. Just still looking for their ship. Reason I said that it could be in the late 1800's is that Mary (1897)was born in Corleone and Catherine (1900), Louisiana
Thank you for all your help....everyone is amazing.

Valarie, Notice that also on the Census, it stated that Laura was born in Flordia...she was born in Corleone, Sicily and married Nick June 13, 1896 Corleone, Province of Palermo, Sicily. Not quite sure who are Harold and Hellen were. Fannie was married to Frank Gennaro.

Allowing for the fact that US Census records can be notoriously inaccurate :-)...
Looking at this census, my thoughts are that Harold is the widowed father of Frank Gennaro, and Helen is Frank's sister. The census taker didn't even put Frank's first name down... :-D
HOWEVER, I think Valarie has it right with Harold being LAURA's brother, and Helen is probable HIS daughter... :-)

Great Progress....Biaggio is Nicholas's brother and Concetta (Mary)is Nicholas and Laura's daughter. Was told that Nicholas and Laura came to the USA and left Mary behind in Corleone, then went back for her....but it looks like she came with her Uncle.

I looked at several of the pages of the Manilla, Passenger ships list, that they came on and notice there were several other Cuccia's on that same ship. Do you think there was a possibility that Laura (her mother) was also on that ship using her maiden name....Leoluchina [Laura] Calamusa....just a thought.
You don't know how greatful I am for all of your and Tessa's help, you both have been so kind.
