Obtaining Italian birth certificate from the US
My girlfriend is trying to get a copy of her birth certificate from Napoli. She has sent a request to the commune using a request form we found online. She included all required information and a copy of her US drivers license and a self addressed return envelope with international reply coupons. She has yet to recieve anything and it has been just over a month. Is this a normal amount of time? Should we wait longer? Or should we look at other avenues? We are really at a loss as to what to do next. She needs the certificate to get her US passport. Any information would be much appreciated.
Thankyou

Wait two more weeks then you need to take action.
Your problem is that they require a fee of 26 cents or 52 cents. Or perhps a 'bollo' of 14.52 euro. With no simple way of paying it.
Many towns have recently gone to autocertification where anyone needing a birth certificate simply fills out a form declaring the information to be true and signs it. For most purposes this is adequate. By filling out the form on line you probably couldn't say it was for passport purposes.
YOu should phone them and find out what they need. Good luck with this I have been trying to phone them for two weeks and they never answer the phone.
You might try writing, enclosing an addressed envelop and 5 euro! Also photo ID.

Thankyou for your reply. The problem with calling them is neither of us speak fluent Italian. Would there be an english speaking employee there that could help us? It seems really rediculous that it is this hard to request something as widely needed as your birth certificate. Where would we obtain one of these autocertification forms? Thanks again in advance. Any help is appreciated.

I would call anyway and speak to them in English. You will probably be forwarded to someone who understands you. In Italy you can usually find a few English speakers in places like government/regional offices, pharmacies, etc., and especially in a big city like Naples which has a large American military presence.

Write to the Mayor using this format:-

You could try that but I don't have much faith in email in South Italy and you may just be prolonging the wait as you would still have to allow a month for the certificate to arrive before writing the letter.
