Hey T, any luck with mother Giuseppa's last name? That is why I posted both records and make it out on either. Am going through the San Giovanni files to see if I can find anything.

Thanks Livio. All I came up with was CHIERCHIA. Still going through the records to see if there may be a different spelling or confirming what we see.

Do you have copies of any of the indices for the town's records? Sometimes an index helps with identifying the surnames in a town's records.

I found the attached website which lists Italian surnames, even alphabetically, but I am getting no where with this surname. I even thought that possibly the beginning of the surname might be Chirico with pio at the end, but can't find evidence of the existence of any such surname.

I have been able to come up with, I think, Francesco La Magra's death record dated 1890 in San Giovanni Gemini. The name of the wife is different. Listed as Rosalia Tagliareni. But, the mother's name is Giuseppa Cardella. The age at death is listed as 82. I am seeking additional information to confirm whether this is all correct. I found only one other child, Vincenza La Magra, who died just before Caterina with the same father. Going through the indexes I have not found any name close to the mother listed on Caterina's death record. Have checked Ancestry, the phone listings in Italy, message boards, Ancestry, and RootsWeb without finding anything even close. Could this be an error of the informant???

Well, finally found the mother of Caterina La Magra. I found it on Caterina's brother Giuseppe's death record.

Father: Francesco Catalano
Mother: Giuseppa Sorce Procopio (which is the surname of the mother, Sorce or Procopio?

My question on this is the dual names. Was it common in the Agrigento province to carry two last names. Just a little confused.

The name Pricopio does not exist so I tried changing the first vowel to an "a" then and "o". I am still concerned what I look for in the indexes. Sorce or Procopio?

The surname "Pricopi" does exist in the current Italian white pages, so I assume that the "o" at the end was dropped at some point.

Duh! Should have looked there first. erudita74 or Livio, can you explain anything about the double surnames and how do you know about the first surname? I understand it somewhat in Spanish naming but at a lost for the Italian.

For reference, I have found some earlier threads on this forum which you can access through the following link. Quite frankly,I am still baffled by the use of double surnames in my one ancestral town.
