Hi, thankyou for your replies :) sorry, i meant to say my grandfather was Umberto Monastra, named after Castell'umberto , his birthplace.
He was born in 1920 and still alive and well :)
Salvatore Monastra was born 1884 and died in nz 1970,which matches your reply Marty. Thankyou :)
Anyway I can go further back on his side as nothing is known here about his parents?

Hi, Tanya :-D !

The civil registrations for Castell'Umberto, Messina, are available to rent and view at your nearest LDS Family History Center. They have microfilms (births, marriages, deaths) for years 1865-1910

I took the liberty of emailing the anagrafe office in Castell'Umberto yesterday, as two years ago I had very good luck with the town official there replying almost immediately to my emails. At the time, I had already done the available microfilmed records for the town, but these only started in 1866. The town official, over the course of a week's worth of emails, got me back to the early 1820s. Anyway, his results below coincide with suanj's finding that there was no Salvatore Monastra born in Castell'Umberto on Aug 20, 1884, which was the date I had reported to him. There are, however, individuals with the name Salvatore Monastra with different dates of birth in the town registers.

COMUNE DI CASTELL'UMBERTO
In risposta vostra email si comunica che non risulta nato in questo comune alcun nominativo con la data di nascita riportata, bensi con date di nascita diverse.cordiali saluti gaetano battagliola

Another thing is that you can now access all of the records for this town online. The ones starting with the years 1866 can be accessed at familysearch.org

Italy, Messina, Patti, Ci...on (Tribunale), 1823-1941 Castell'Umberto-below are the only records available at this website

The earlier records were originally available at familysearch.org, but now to access them you must go to the following website and search under Castania, which was the town's name before Castell'Umberto-

http://antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/ ... i+Messina/

The records there go from 1820 to 1865.

Well, i guess my grandad Umberto must of been born somewhere else??
I know they are all Strombolani,so perhaps records from there? If there are any? So exciting and interesting.....thankyou all again from New Zealand :)

Tanya
I sent another email to the town official in Castell'Umberto to see if Umberto was born there in 1920. I also told him that I was looking for a town of birth of his parents. I'll let you know if I hear from him again.

Tanya
Umberto was definitely born in Castell'Umberto-here is the reply from the town official in the anagrafe office there-

MONASTRA UMBERTO- M- nato a CASTELL'UMBERTO -il 01/03/1920 -atto 31 P1 padre MONASTRA SALVATORE CALOGERO
madre CRESCILLO ELEONORA -stato civile CELIBE

Umberto M Monastro born in Castell'Umberto on March 1, 1920, record #31, Part I, father Salvatore Calogero Monastra and mother Eleonora Crescillo, civile state, single.

Do you know if Umberto had siblings older than him that would have been born in the town or have any idea what year Salvatore and Eleonora might have married? If there were older brothers or sisters, I could then estimate a marriage year for them and ask the town official to check the marriage registers to see if there is a marriage record for them. That would have their places of birth and names of their parents on it.

Anyway, at least you now have a middle name for Salvatore which could help in searching for the correct one.

wonderful ! I made confusion between Salvatore and Umberto; Salvatore was the father (1884) and Umberto the son (1920) ok, happy that the birth record is found!
