Help with ship manifest

Post by ginaruiz1998 »

Hello!

Can someone please take a look at this ship manifest? I am looking at line 22....for Salvatore Trifiletti....and can you make out the years that he was previously in the U.S??? Does it mean 1890-91 or 1890-1901? Also...does it say that he is simply going to the "city?"

Grazie!

Where you think it states "city" it is actually an abbreviation for "citizen" - you will see this same abbreviation at the left of the line # before his name also. In addition, the VERY faint writing before Novara is the word "Citizen" as well.

I believe the dates you referenced are for 1890 - 1901... If you look a few lines down you will see "96-901" which I suspect refers to 1896-1901. :-)

Oh my gosh! THANK YOU! We didn't know that he was a citizen! Can you make out anything else on it? Maybe where he was living in the US? I would like to try and find the naturalization papers....but I have never done that before so that will be interesting!

Thank you!

Hello Gina!

Unfortunately, there is no other information given about his address. Have you found his US Census records?
Maybe we can help...
Where did he live in US? Names of spouse, and children if he had them.
Occupation?

Can you clarify his age on this manifest? It looks like 50...

Well....not exactly! :-)

Here is what appears to be a US Passport Application that Salvatore applied for at the US Embassy in Rome, Italy the month before he returned to the US (manifest you found for Oct 1901)
The application is dated September 1901

Salvatore lists his place of birth as Novara di Sicilia, on 2 February 1851
He sailed on the SS Caledonia from Naples on 14 May 1891, and has resided for 10 years in MINNESOTA.
He was naturalized in the Aitkin County District Court in Minnesota on 27 April 1900.
He is a farmer.
He left the US on 5 June 1901 on the SS Citta di Torino, arriving Naples. He has resided in Novara until June 1901, and is now returning to the US.

Yes...I saw these three death records. So sad. I have a copy of Michela's death record....and her and Salvatore's marriage record. And I believe Michela immigrated on August 4th, 1904.....however when you click on "view manifest" on ellisisland.org the wrong manifest comes up! UGH! My cousin told me, that on it, Michela lists that she is going to see her cousin, Salvatore Trifilette. I hope they weren't first cousins!
