Attached is the death record of Gandolfo Ferrera.

His occupation is listed as what looks like 'Fabriciore'. I am guessing this means he was the village Blacksmith. However his father is listed as a 'Bordengio' - and I have no idea what that is.
Am I correct that it says he died June 11th and was 80 years old?

Re: occupation help
I believe the occupation is fabriciere (which I have seen spelled with two c's or as fabricciere. He appears to have been a lay or secular individual who did work for the church in the capacity of a worker who may have helped with the bldg and maintenance of the church. The word is derived from the word for factory. I found the following pdf file, which you can copy and paste into google translator to help you with understanding its contentsbvbellomo wrote:Attached is the death record of Gandolfo Ferrera.

I'll have to look into the other occupation you mention.

Looking at the word, I believe you are correct, but still don't understand if this makes him an architect, a high administrator or a low level janitor. Would have been Fabriciere at San Giovanni, which is mentioned several times in the record, and I believe is the name of the church.

He was in a supervisory position, as far as I can tell from the various websites where I am finding the occupation. He supervised the bldg of the church, for one thing, and oversaw its maintenance. It appears that he was a lay person (not a member of the clergy or religious order) who had a high position in the church as an administrator, even being a lay member on the church council. He may have had additional responsibilities which had nothing to do with the bldg and maintenance of the church such as the administration of the church's assets or even being responsible for the church census. I even saw one website where it stated that he was an elected local official, but I don't know if this was the case in all towns. Anyway, he appears to have been a man of importance, both in the local parish, and in the town itself.
Two of the websites-
Dizionario della lingua italiana, Volume 3-p.560
Also this link has him as a member of a church council-

Re: occupation help
I don't mind piggybacking, but if you do, please at least take a guess at the letters if you can't guess what the word means
Now I think it is 'Bordenaio', the first 5 letters seem clear as "Borde" and the end is muddled, but looks similar to 'capraio' listed on my other ancestors.
As for what that means, it could have something to do with beads (bordare), mules (bardotto), whores (bordello), or bards (bardo). I am out of other ideas. Maybe I will find it somewhere else in the records.

Re: occupation help
Thanks!
I see "Bordonaro" on many lists of occupations (I haven't seen "Bordonaio"), but this seems an unusual occupation. A mule proper is "mulo" and "mulattiere" is also on the list of occupations. Bardotto refers to the much less common hinny, and it seems odd a small village would have someone that specializes in hinnies, and that his son would end up in an important Church position. In the absence of other evidence, this however makes the most sense.
BTW - I still had other questions. Am I correct that it says he died June 11th and was 80 years old? Was San Giovanni a church, or the neighborhood where he lived or something else?

Re: occupation help
You are correct about the age and the death day. I'm not familiar with Polizzi however I believe that San Giovanni is the name of the neighborhood.bvbellomo wrote: BTW - I still had other questions.
