Birth Certificate or Verification

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Birth Certificate or Verification

Post by jbaltutis »

My wife is looking to find out more about her great-great grandparents. His name is Francesco Lorusso and they came to Boston, MA from Anzano, Italy in approx 1891. Does anyone know if I can try to get a copy or verification of his birth records? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum :D !

Can you provide a bit more information for us?

There are several ANZANO towns - which one was Francesco from?
Anzano, comune of Cappella Maggiore, Treviso, Veneto
Anzano del Parco, comune of Anzano del Parco, Como, Lombardy
Anzano di Puglia, comune of Anzano di Puglia, Foggia, Puglia

Do you have an approximate date of birth for Francesco?

Arrival in about 1891... NY or Boston?

Name of Francesco's wife/children?

Anything you can provide will be of help in the search.

Additionally, you can write directly to the comune...
We can provide an address for you and resources for writing your request in Italian :-)

I found additional information on the son (Giovanni Lorusso), not sure if biological or not? I found a World War I draft registration card that listed his birth place as Anzano degli Irpini. Francesco was born in 1863/1864. His wife's name is Josephine Auciello. I am assuming they arrived in Boston as that is where they all worked and died. Francesco died in 1951 in Roxbury, MA and Giovanni died in Roxbury or Boston in March 1966. Giovanni's birth date is June 24, 1892 and was married to Carmella LoRusso with the exact same maiden name. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide you with. I really appreciate your help.

After further research Giovanni Lorusso was born in Anzano di Pugglia on June 24, 1892. Is there somewhere I can write to get a copy of his birth certificate?

Vital records are held at the comune(town)

You can write directly to Anzano di Puglia.
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Municipio, 1
71020 Anzano di Puglia (FG)

I have visited Anzano di Puglia and visited with the Lorusso family. The elder is the father, Giovanni LoRusso. Brought to Boston as an infant, but his family moved back to Anzano. Giovanni is a wonderful man, fought and was honored for his service in WWII. Spent his life as a teacher in the village. I am friends with his son Francesco. The names in our family are recycled from generation to generation.

I have been to the commune, the city hall where all the records are kept. It is a quiet little town. It was amazing for my sister and I, and on a subsequent trip my daughter and grandson, to see the village that my paternal grandparents emmigrated from. The little stone hose is "caduta", fallen from earthquakes and old age, but it was amazing to walk the grounds and touch the stones. I hope you found all the info you were looking for. Are you trying for dual citizenship? If so, let me know how its going. My sister and i are thinking of the same thing!
