Still working on it, Donna. I see that Pasquale was the son of deceased Consalvo. After his name is his profession which looks like an abbreviation of the word dottore followed by di Ariano

I know you didn't ask about that. His last name-looks like Petrileo, but I can't find such a surname. I am guessing there are two l's in the name, even though the second one doesn't look like an L

The occupation looks like "soldato civico"-not that that makes sense to me. However, when I did a search of this on the Italian search engine virgilio.it, I got two hits
http://ricerca.virgilio.it/ricerca?qs=% ... erca=&f=us

I see that there is a mention of the cathedral in the record-but I don't see that it was ever called by the name I see- Santo Biase?-normally you would see San and not Santo Biase-I just can't find that there was ever a church in this town with that name. Still searching. Possibly the parish was Santa Biasia (feminine), but I can't find anything on that either

erudita,
so the words after his name are 'di fu consalvo'...i do see that now. i believe that this is one of those older records where an 'i' is sometimes written as/looks like an 'l'.

San Biase is a parish in that town...i would have never figured that was what was written!

he was a 'street soldier' - i will read more of the hits from virglio.

thanks for your help.

Yes, I agree with you that the i's in the record do look like t's. That's good that San Biase is a parish in the town. I amended my previous reply-I am not positive about what looks to me to be an abbreviation for the father's profession.

You certainly do have some very challenging records, Donna.

I read "Pascale Petrillo (with a "short l") del fu Consalvo di questa Città di Ariano". To tell the truth, "di" is not so evident, but ink has spread on the page, so it might be possible. However, that should be the sense.
As to the Parish, I found a reference in Internet about the demolished church of San Biagio (San Biase is on old dialectal form) in Ariano.
But the record is actually hard to read!

pippo, thanks for the additional information....on these records i have seen both Biase and Biago as the parish. i will do a search for this church to find when & why it might have been demolished.

Re: Pascale.....older records show Pasquale which is I probably why i did not read this record as closely as i should. i am going to go back through all this family's records to insure i did not make the same mistake - seeing the 's' and thinking 'q'.

thanks again!

Just to add that "Pascale" and "Pasquale" are substantially the same name. "Pascale" is a dialectal form, and I think you will often find both forms for the same person.

THANK YOU for clarifying this...saves me lots of work!

do you have a memory of what you searched and found the information about the church being demolished? i've done a few different searches and have come up unsuccessful. i am just curious about this so please don't go through any extra effort.

thanks again, pippo

You're very welcome!
I found just this one:

http://www.arianosacra.it/diocesanoariano.html

It's about the diocesan museum of Ariano, where several paintings from demolished churches are collected.
