US passenger list

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

US passenger list

Post by enonewt »

My great grandfather immigrated to the USA in 1887 (March 28th) I have not been able to locate him on any of the immigrant passenger ships. He departed from Le Havre.

Name Angelo Aita born 1854 in Buia Udine Italy

Any hints or help is much appreciated.

Hello Chris :D

Are you sure he arrived in US as a passenger on a ship? Could he have been a crewman? Or is it possible that he sailed to Canada or Mexico and crossed over the border?

1887 is an early date. I checked Castle Garden arrivals (Ellis Island opened in 1892) and did not find an Angelo Aita.
Here is the link to the Castle Garden site:

Have you searched at the "Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild" site?

I believe that I found your Angelo arrival; I am pretty sure:
New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Alla Angelo
Name: Alla Angelo
Arrival Date: 13 Apr 1887
Birth Date: abt 1854
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Italian
Place of Origin: Italy
Port of Departure: Antwerp, Belgium
Destination: New York
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Rhynland

line 248

the surname is transcribed Alla but seeming Aita to me; I am pretty sure also because the on line 249: Santo Chittaro 23 old and by Udine Archive
CHITTARO SANTO
Nato nel 1864 a BUIA da GIOVANNI BATTISTA e MOLINARO LUCIA
(born in 1864 in Buia son of Giovanni Battista and Lucia Molinaro)

Thank you so much for your help. I think you may have found it. In 1924 my Great Grandmother (Maria Pittino) applied for a passport to go back and visit family, on the application she indicated Angelo's ship arrived March 28, 1887 from Le Havre but did not know the name of ship. Great work!
