Act of Matrimony for Vincenza Giulino and Leonardo Miceli
Dated April 5, 1908 at 12:30 in the town hall of Ribera

Groom: Leonardo Miceli, single, age 30, farmer*, born and resident in Ribera. Son of deceased Vito Miceli and deceased Accursia Romeo-residents in the town when they were alive.

Bride: Vincenza Giulino, single, age 23, farmer*. Born and resident in Ribera. Daughter of Michele Giulino and Giuseppe Cosentino.

Witnesses:Giovanni Ragusa, 31, farmer*, and Rosario Ragusa, 27, farmer*

Publications posted on door of this town hall on two Sundays, the 15th and 22nd of last March past

All parties in the record, except for the town official, were illiterate.

*some dictionaries translate villico as farmer; others as countryman or plowman. Here is some info I found on villici*

The villici were landless, poor peasants, who lived in crude dwellings with their families, outside of the village center, in far off communi, near the fields they tended. Once a year they would present themselves in the village piazza to seek a contract for the next growing season. Sometimes they would be granted the same plot of land to farm; at other times, a different one kilometers away, or even no plot at all. In the absence of supervision, the villici did nothing to improve the land. Their drive for sustenance forced these temporary laborers to exploit the land, sow on nearby plots which had been designated to remain fallow, and to emphasize quantity over quality (Bell, pp.19-20).

You're very welcome. The info is from a book by Rudolph M. Bell called Fate, Honor, Family and Village. I own a copy, but if you go to googlebooks.com and type in the title or his name, you can read some of this book online.

I sent you a private message about record #41.

Here is the translation for record #340-birth record of Calogera Giulino-
The record is dated on Nov 14, 1886, but she was born on the 10th, to Michele Giulino, age 27, a peasant/farmer, and Giuseppa Corsentino, who was living with him. The birth took place in the house at #45 via Oliveto.
