Tamberino relatives

Post by veggiemuffin »

Hi. I'm new here - just signed up. I'm researching my grandmother's Italian family - Tamberino. I never see the name or variations in any surname website so maybe it isn't a common Italian name. Anyway, this is especially difficult since she was raised in an orphanage in South Bend, Indiana with her 2 brothers. They were in the orphanage between about 1915 to 1930. The father was Joseph Tamberino and I don't know the mother's name. I've done the usual census records and city directory searches on Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org. I've tried various spellings. There should be a Joseph Tamberino and a wife with a baby in the 1910 census. The 2 others were born between censuses, then straight to the orphanage apparently. I've seached all over Indiana and Illinois. Now I'm posting this in hopes the info above will ring a bell with someone.

The "kids" are Daniel Tamberino born in 1912, John L. born in 1914 and Mary Frances Tamberino born in 1909. I've seen the names spelled various ways on censuses and city directories when I'm sure it's them. I don't know Joseph's BD. I only guess based on the kids ages to be around 1885. He was born in Italy, according to what grandma told me when she was alive.

in Orphanage with Daniel
I cannot find the births in all Cook County, IL... as a well Joseph marriage...

I know no if the data posted in a public genealogic trees by ancestry.com are accurate, but almost for the kids I believe that the infos are right..
maybe they was no born in Cook County, IL, but in another county of Illinois... it is possible... Joseph Tamberino on the genealogic trees are : 1895 and 1885... maybe 1885 could be more correct..

I checked abt The Tamberinos( possible italian version of surname: Tamburino, Tamburrino, Tamburrini etc..) and I found a Giuseppe TAMBURRINO born in Roma, IT travelling back from Canada in 1910 and joining at wife Carmela in Alton, Madison, IL..

Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 about Giuseppe Tamburrino
Name: Giuseppe Tamburrino
Arrival Date: Nov 1910
Port of Arrival: Port Huron, Michigan, United States
Residence Country: Canada
Age: 24
Birth Date: abt 1886
Birth Country: Italy
Gender: Male
Record Type: Manifests
Line Number: 6

the father was Donato and lived in Roma, IT; Donato first name matching with Joseph 's son first name. Daniel, because many italian Donato anglicized the first name in Daniel... after this trip, I cannot find the 1910 census, if Carmela stayed in Alton, IL when the 1910 census was taken..
I found just another record:
U.S. City Directories, 1821-1989 about Joseph Tamberine
Name: Joseph Tamberine
Gender: Male
Residence Year: 1916
Street Address: 1109 Cherry Alley
Residence Place: Alton, Illinois
Occupation: Laborer
Spouse: Mary Tamberine

Publication Title: Alton, Illinois, City Directory, 1916

The wife is Mary, maybe she was Maria Carmela...

just the poster can give us more details.. bye,

Wow. That was fast! I have most of that info (about the kids) saved to my tree on Ancestry.com but it took me months to find all that info. I hope I can become fast at this in the future.

However, I did not have any info about the father except his name and likelihood of being in Illinois/Indiana area. I'm excited about checking it out to see if it could be him. Once I find him for sure and get the mother's name I'll work on tracing them back to Italy. Thanks so much.

Since I posted the original post I have made a big discovery. A long lost relative who knew my grandmother very well tells me that grandma's name wasn't Mary Frances at all. her given name was Philomena. It was changed later; not sure when. Most likely by her adopted parents. So I am instead searching for Philomena Tamberino or Tamborino, born approximately 1909. I also learned that grandma invented birth dates since she didn't know when she was born. Plus she never knew where she was born - could have been Italy for all she knew. She always wrote Chicago as her place of birth on forms. Just to make things really difficult.

I would not give up on Cook County for birth records of these children. Many records that I found were in the Catholic church listing of Baptisms (Chicago Dioceses on Family Search). The family members I found have never appeared in the Cook county birth listings to date. In fact, when I presented the baptisms for my father, uncle and aunt to the County, Cook County then found a warehouse where some birth records were stored and sent me a copy. Those particular records now appear in the Cook County birth listings.

This website gives the names of all the churches in the Chicago Dioceses and for many it shows the ethnicity and if filmed by the LDS and what is available.

Since I posted this I now know that the family name is really Tamborini. I presume Tamberino was given to the children in the orphanage and that is all they knew. I found the obituary of the children's mother in two South Bend, Indiana newspapers. Her name was Caroline and all 3 children were mentioned in the obit and it said the father, Joseph, had abandoned her some time ago. I believe Joseph was in Rockford, IL for some time. Also, one of the brothers in the orphanage evidently did his own search because it said on his death certificate that his mother's name was Caroline Berlina. I don't think Berlina is a very common Italian name. I keep finding it as a name for Germans, although her death certificate said she was born in Italy, but her parents names were "unknown". I'm having difficulty finding the parents of either Joseph Tamborini or his wife Caroline Berlina.

I believe that the right Joseph surname spelling is Tamburrini; I believe that he coming from Fossacesia, IT:
First Name: Giuseppe
Last Name: Tamburrini
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Fossacesia
Date of Arrival: Apr 18, 1903
Age at Arrival: 17y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Gallia
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0012

final destination Philadelphia, PA, joining at Mauro Sisti brother in law...
I believe so because also the Tamborini(Tamburrini) in Indiana coming from same italian place... I found a naturalization in Cook County, Il abt a Domenico Tamburrini (Dominick Tambarrini) coming from Fossacesia and naturalized in Chicago IL
Record Details for Volume 264

The surname and the US places (Saint Joseph, IN; South Bend, IN; Chicago IL) let me think that Giuseppe Tamburrini ship's manifest could be abt your ancestor.. just a my idea..

Very interesting. I have the 1930 census of Joseph in Rockford and think it is him but not positive. His age and his "age at first marriage" is right. One child was born there so it's a place the family lived at one point.

I'm definitely going to follow up on Dominick as a relative and the ship manifest. I assumed his destination would be Chicago, though, since that's the area where the family ended up.
