Need Help Finding Geremia / Mangino Family Caserta

Post by LorriC »

Hello,
I am so excited I found this site!! I am having a Geremia / Mangino family reunion next Sunday 12/8 and would love it if I can provide some more information on my family for everyone coming.

This is what I know:
My great grandfather was Stefan/Stefano/Steve Geremia (settled in New Haven, CT)
- He was from Caserta (Rochetta en Croce)
- one brother we know was Gustav (settled in Wallingford, CT)
I'd love to get as far back as I can. I don't know his parents names, etc.

He married Lena Mangino
- her parents were Bridget and Giovanni Mangino
- brother was possibly Michael Mangino

ANY information on either family would be so greatly appreciated! My mom is 82 and it would mean so much to her and her cousins.

Thanks so much!

This might be Stefano's Ellis Island manifest:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0007

He was 21 in 1898, so, born abt 1877. Does this match your family info?

And this is Stefano birth act:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n359020866

that matches date on his WW2 Draft Card:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1696504831

It must be him, as wife's name is Lena Geremia

Stefano was born on December 24th, 1877 in Rocchetta e Croce, address: 2 ter, Via Piazzetta
Father: Michele, 37 years, mason
Mother: Angelamaria Santagata, peasant

This is Gustavo's manifest:

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0001

They both came to join brother Errico.
I could not find his manifest, but this is his WWI Registration Card:

This is Enrico's (this is the original spelling) birth act:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n359020866

He was born on September 3rd, 1874 (date on Registration Card is wrong), the son of Michele, land-owner, son of the deceased Lorenzo,
and Angelamaria Santagata, 25 years, daughter of Alessandro.

Hi Again,
Thanks again for the info. I am confused because although I know it to be true, I can't find anything that shows Stefano was a brother to Gustave and Errico. I found a manifest listing all the children of Michele & Maria Angela/Angelamarie but Stefano wasn't on it.

Hi Lorri,
if I understand what you are confused about,
Errico's and Stefano's birth acts show they shared the same parents; moreover,Gustavo's and Stefano's Ellis Island Manifests stated they were going to the USA to join their brother Errico.
Still, I don't understand what kind of manifest you found about Michele's children.

Hi…on the second page of Stefano's birth record, the two names are Michele Geremia and (?) Izzo. Who was the Izzo? And again, any information on the Mangino side?
Thanks again SO much!

The manifest I found with Michele's/Angelamarie's (grand?) children is on Ancestry.com. It shows Gaetano (19), Alessandro (13), Rosa (11) and Cecilia (16) 1903 Passenger list.

Paolo Izzo is the Registrar who wrote and signed the act. He is also mentioned at the start of the act, after the date.

Michele and family travelled to the USA in 1903, as you said:

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027

On the following page of the passenger list, you can find more Geremia's who might be related to them, And one (Camillo), who can be another son (I'll check as soon as I can):

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0027

Of course, Errico, Gustavo and Stefano did not travel with them, as they were already in the USA (Stefano since 1898, and Gustavo since 1902).

I'm having some trouble with Mangino family...
I only found this reference for John and Bridget in New Haven, 1920:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCN2-Q1F

I do not have access to Ancestry.com to see the image, but according to the summary, their children had already gone.
I found 1930 and 1940 Censuses for Stephen. In the former, Lena has 1890 as her immigration date; in the latter, she is mentioned as Nicolena (that would be Nicolina in Italian):
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1055104612

I also found a naturalization index card fro one Michael Mangino in Connecticut, but unfortunately, no details are available.
Do you have any other info about them?

Hi..thanks again so much!
I believe Giovanni and Bridget Mangino also had a son Michael who was married to Ann. Their children were Edna and Dorothy.
I noticed you have Amendola's in your lineage. We have many here in New Haven. Any relation? I am happy to find information for you if you need any.
My husband is direct relations with the Cavaliere family in Amalfi and the Mormile and Cavaliere families in Rome.
So much history!
