Saponara di Grumento Nova
I would also appreciate information about the following Saponara di Grumento Nova/Grumento Nova families:
Toscano (Carmela), Lauria, Cavallo or Cavalo, Pricolo, Garlanda, Abate Mateo, Padula (spelling?). I am particularly interested to learn more about my great-grandparents: Guiseppi PRICOLO who married Rosalie CAVALLO(CAVALO - spelling?) in the mid 1800's. They had two daughters Maria born 1887 and Rosa who married Donato Toscano. Thank you for your help.

Records for the years prior to 1866 need to be rented through a Mormon library. I have looked through two films so far and the Allegati are fantastic Hopefully they will be put on line soon.

UPDATING SOME OF MY SDG FAMILY SURNAMES
This original post is very outdated now so I've decided to write a very brief update. (Such a challenge for people who thrive on detail! )AngelaGrace56 wrote:I would also appreciate information about the following Saponara di Grumento/Grumento Nova families:
Toscano (Carmela), Lauria, Cavallo or Cavalo, Pricolo,Garlanda, Abate Mateo, Padula (spelling?). SURNAME: ABATEMATTEO
I have come to the conclusion that “Abate Mateo” is not a Saponara di Grumento name. I haven’t come across it in any of the BMD’s for the years 1866-1910 nor the two films I have rented from LDS. I am sure now that it is spelt “Abatematteo” (and not “Abate Mateo”). Nowadays Abatematteo appears mainly in the region of Puglia and not at all in Basilicata, according to the following link:
http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... spuWdIW0uc
The person I am looking for is Francesco Abatematteo who married Agnesa De Milita. Agnesa was born in 1883 in Saponara Di Grumento (SDG). I haven’t been able to find their marriage record so either they were married after 1910 or in Francesco’s home town. My understanding is that they settled in SDG so I think that it is more likely they were married in SDG after 1910. I think they had a vineyard (La Vigna). Someone reading this post just might have this couple in their history which might help me to fill in some gaps. (Forever hopeful!) (I would love to hear from anyone who has a De Milita/Di Milita from Saponara di Grumento in their family history. While I do have a lot of information already, there are still gaps. In particular, I would love and appreciate some photos of this famiily.)
SURNAME: GALANTE
The name “Garlanda” which I wrote down phonetically many years ago when I was gleaning info from my parents, is actually spelt “Galante”. My Galante family was born in Sarconi, married then moved to SDG.
SAPONARA DI GRUMENTO FAMILY NAMES OF INTEREST:
Besides the SDG surnames Cavallo, De Milita/Di Milita, Lauria, Padula, Pricolo, and Toscano, which I now have a lot more info about, the following are some of the other Saponara di Grumento surnames of interest to me:
Argenzio, Bafunno, Caifano, Casella, Ciuffo, Cotugno, De Novis, La Rossa, La Salvia, Nigri/Nigro, Peluso, Romeo, Vertunni
Thank you for this reading post.

Re: Saponara di Grumento
Another Possibility: I've just had a recheck through the indices 1866-1909, because I was a little rushed earlier, and have found another Vincenzo Argenzio, which I missed the first time I went through, (the entry was squeezed into the start of the indices in small writing). Because the only info I have is the name Vincenzo Argenzio I'll wait to hear back from you with further details about him, time-frame, dob, immigration if applicable, who he married, parents if known, children, etc:-)AngelaGrace56 wrote: ↑26 Jan 2017, 20:23 Welcome to the Forum, Tanisha!

Re: Saponara di Grumento Nova
Hello, my name is Emanuel Tousounis and I researching my mother's side who is from the town of Grumento Nova. My grandmother who is named Gloria Lavelgia daughter of Arthur Lavelgia(born 1893) and Rosalia Ferro(born 1891). Arthur was son of Teresa Lavelgia which was her maiden named and to our knowledge never married. Rumor is she had Arthur out of wedlock and the father is rumored to be named as Thomas Collogia which we have no clue is true or not. He was also rumored to be a police officer and we're unsure if he was from that area or not.
Arthur's wife, Rosalia Ferro's parents were Antonio Ferro(born 1857) and Rosalia Casella(born 1859) which I'm interested in learning more about both of their relatives if possible. I would like to dig to see if I can search for marriage records and or baptismal records. Any information you could direct me would be appreciated.

I've quickly found some records to help get you started, as follows:
Birth No 7: Arturo (Arthur) La Veglia
Saponara di Grumento: 27 January 1893
Appearing was Teresa La Veglia, 25 yo, contadina, living this town, who reported that at 1.40 am, on 23 January 1893, in via Peruzzo, No 206, from her union with a single man, not related etc. (No mention of who the father might be. The name Collogia is not local, that I recall.)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043547
1880 Marriage No 1: Antonio Ferri e Rosolia Casella
22 February 1880
Groom: Antonio Ferri, 23 yo, contadino, son of the deceased Bernardo Ferri e Rosa Ianneo
Bride: Rosolia Casella, 20 yo, contadina, daughter of Francesco Paolo Casella e the deceased Carmina Caputi.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043547
(Unfortunately 1880 Death Records are not online so was unable to locate death record for Carmina Caputi who died just before the marriage - 10 February 1880)
The following records I have saved to my computer from when I was looking at micro films. These records are now online and much clearer to read than the ones that I have. I'll let you take a look for them. I've given you the necessary details to help you find the records. If you have any problems get back to me and I'll help.

Re: Saponara di Grumento Nova
Following on from previous post:
The following info was taken from Antonio and Rosa's 1845 marriage allegati:
1821 Birth No 11: Antonio Ferri, son of Pasquale Ferri, and Cristina Savino, born 9 February 1821
1842 Death Record No 45: Pasquale Ferri, husband of Cristina Savino, died 11 June 1842. No parents mentioned but in the marriage allegati I located the following Death Record which I believe to be Pasquale's father:
1815 Death Record: Paolo Ferri, 70 yo, husband of Anna Maria Ciuffo, died 6 September 1815.
1822 Birth Record No 68: Paolina, Rosa, Carmina Ianneo, daughter of Domenicantonio Ianneo, and Vincenza Cavallo, born 19 June 1822, SDG.
1826 Death Record No 4: Domenicantonio Ianneo, husband of Vincenza Cavallo, died on 11 June 1826, no parents mentioned here, but in the marriage allegati I located the following Death Record which I believe to be Domenicantonio Ianneo's father:
1816 Death No 20: Bernardo Ianneo, husband of Paolina Ciuffo, died 6 April 1816.
I would suggest that you look for the originals of the above records as often the extracts contained in the allegati have errors. The originals should all be online at the antenati site. If you have any difficulties locating them let us know.

Death Record: Rosa Ianneo
Death Record No 40: Rosa Ianneo
Registered Saponara di Grumento: 23 October 1897
Died yesterday, 22 October 1897, 2.30 pm in the house in Via Peruzzo, No 241. She was 75 yo (1822), a contadina, who resided in Saponara while living, born in this town, the daughter of the deceased Domenicantonio (Ianneo), and the deceased Vincenza Cavallo, both contadini, who had lived in this town during their lifetime. Rosa was the widow of Antonio Ferri.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043547
I realised after I'd posted that Antonio Ferri's father's name on both his 1856 Birth Record and 1880 marriage record with Rosolia Casella, differ from the 1845 Marriage Record for Antonio Ferri with Rosa Ianneo. I've since gone through the Marriage Records and there is no marriage between Bernardo Ferri and Rosa Ianneo. After the 1845 marriage between Antonio Ferri and Rosa Ianneo I found three children born to Antonio Ferri and Rosa Ianneo and then the 1856 Birth Record for Antonio Ferri, son of Bernardo Ferri and Rosa Ianneo. All the records named the grandfather as the deceased Pasquale Ferri. I've searched extensively and I can't find a Bernardo Ferri anywhere. Possibly the clerk made an error on Antonio's 1856 birth record which was then copied to the 1880 marriage record. This does happen, but usually it's picked up years later, like in the case of a marriage, and then rectified.
