Mazzella

Post by linder »

I am looking for info on grandfather Luigi Mazzella, born 11/29/1870 or 71 in Ischia. He emmigrated to the US and died in New York 9/26/1945. His father was, I believe, Nicolo Mazzella and mother was Filomena Schiano. There may have been a longer version of his father's name, but this is what we have. Any help would be appreciated that could point me in the right direction. Linda

Hi Linder,

Found a 1910 census record of a Luigi who's wife is Bernice. They have 2 children at this time - Nicholas F and Louisa M?

Would this be your family?

If you know what the longer version of the father's name please mention...
born 11/29/1870 or 71
Just wondering how you managed to get a month and day... but not the year??

Did a quick search for a manifest and the Luigi's I found were either too old or too young... were you able to locate one?

The 1910 census record you have is correct. Some records say he was born in 1870, some 1871, but I'm going with 1870. His father's name appears as either Nicolombuono or Nicolotano, and sometimes his mother's name is listed as Filomena Schiano or Philomena. I haven't found anything through Ellis Island yet, but I have a copy of Marina Mercantile Italiana, date 20 April, 1884. It isay it is a Libretto di Matricolazione. Luigi and Berenice were married in New York in 1903, so he came to NY before that. Thanks for your help.

Can you mention the names of his brothers? (If he had any?)

Years ago a very elderly aunt mentioned Profirio (or Porfirio), as well as Frank (?) as Luigi's brothers. She said he came to New York with a brother, but the brother returned to Italy as he wasn't enamored with New York. She had also mentioned the name, Vicenzo (or Vincenzo), but that could be a further generation back. She seemed to know more about her mother's family than her father's. Evidently Luigi Americanized his name to Louis. You are being so helpful. Thank you so much.

Both of the scenarios that you mentioned are possible. I shall have to do some more digging and write to Italy for information. You have been incredibly helpful. Let me know if you can think of anywhere else that I can try.

It hadn't occured to me that maybe there was a Schiano cousin involved. That's something else for me to go on. Thanks.
