Poggi family from Naples

Post by BeaPoggi »

Hello. I am looking for family members of my great great grandfather Giuseppe Poggi who came from Naples. I do not know his birth date but I am guessing that he would have lived in Naples sometime around 1860-1880. He left Naples and moved to London, marrying my great great grandmother Mary Lloyd. They ran a boarding school in London. Their son (my great grandfather) was named Richard Backwell, and my grandmother was Pauline Betty Backwell. I would love to know if I still have family in Naples.

Thanks Marty. I am not sure. Some of the details are similar and some are different. Do you have any way of seeing if Mary Eliza Poggi, daughter of this Dominico Giuseppe Poggi married a Richard Backwell

Hi if Giuseppe Poggi was the father of Richard.. as it is possible that Richard don't had Poggi
surname, but Backwell??

I was presuming Richard Backwell was Giuseppe's son, but perhaps Richard Backwell married one of Giuseppe's daughters. Would explain the name change.

Giuseppe Domenico POGGI's daughter, Mary Eliza POGGI, married in Firenze, Toscano, on 1 Sep 1871, John Spurrell PODE, a Solicitor, from Plympton in Devonshire.
This marriage took place while Domenico & his family were living in Naples (between mid 1862 and mid 1871).
John & Mary PODE had 3 children In London (one daughter died in infancy), and in about 1875, John went to Chicago, where he died in 1892, having lived in Chicago and in Cheyenne, Wyoming. His widow Mary settled in New York, & was there in 1910, at Main street, East Hampton, Suffolk County, living with her daughter Mary Frances ANDREWS (aged 37), son-in-law James Stewart ANDREWS, & grandson Thomas S. ANDREWS (aged 16). Her son, Stephen Henry PODE, lived in Utica, Oneida County, N.Y., with his wife Sarah Grace BROWN, & daughter Thelma.

Giuseppe POGGI was born in Montignoso, Tuscany, in 1811, the eldest son of Marco POGGI, who is said to have been of a semi-aristocratic family in those parts (he was named in POGGI's 1848 marriage registration).
He entered the priesthood In Rome (1828-29), and became an ordained Dominican Priest, serving (1833) at a Convent in Viterbo, near Naples, before he left Italy in about 1840.
After a brief spell in France, apparently spending time "duelling" with the Jesuits as he began his journey away from Roman Catholicism, he served several Dominican causes in Uden in Holland, and Ghent in Belgium, before emigrating to England in Jan 1847, and joining the Anglicans.
Now using the additional name of Dominic (which he appears to have acquired on joining that order), he settled in Liverpool, where he met and (in Jan 1848) married Mary Lloyd GODFREY, a daughter of Dr Joseph James GODFERY (an eminent doctor who had gone north from Chatham in Kent, in about 1833) by his 2nd wife Mary Eliza GILES.
Later that year(1848) he re-opened "Seacombe House" in Cheshire - a school that had been opened in 1843 by his wife's uncle, Rev William GILES Jr (he was a Baptist, and was Charles DICKENS's first schoolmaster in Chatham).
In 1853, he transferred his school to New Brighton College, across the River Mersey from Liverpool, and conducted his school there until it burnt to the ground in 1862.
He then returned to the country of his birth, and went with his family to live in Naples, where he took in pupils for teaching, and boarders for income, as well as managing a bookshop for a fledgling Society set up to assist Priests who, like he had years before, had become disillusioned with the Vatican. They were difficult years, and it appears that he may have been forced to abandon his hereditary claims to the POGGI estates of his late father in order to be allowed to remain in Italy practising his "independent" religious convictions, as unpopular as he was with the Roman Church hierarchy. One of his daughters (Mrs Josephine CLARK of Crystal Lake, Pennsylvania) would later (1933) write that POGGI had been called into the presence of Victor Emmanuel the 1st and Pope Pius the 9th, who made a public declaration that "...there was to be no animosity against Rev Dr POGGI" for him having divergent opinions and having "...the courage of his convictions."
In mid 1871, he returned to England, and was appointed Headmaster of Audlem Grammar School, in Cheshire. He died there in 1880.
Domenico (as he signed his Allegation of Intention for a Marriage License in Dec 1847) & Mary had 9 children, a number of whom emigrated to America.

Regards,

Chris PIGOTT (a descendant of Rev William GILES's younger brother Rev John Eustace GILES).

Godfrey Eustace POGGI (born 1861) was a younger son of Dr Domenico Joseph POGGI by his wife Mary Lloyd GODFREY.
By his wife, Beatrice Mary BODLEY, Godfrey had 5 children, four of them surviving in 1911, including one daughter residing with him at North Sheen, Surrey, in the 1911 Census.
She was Barbara Mary POGGI (born Birkdale, 1887), who married by License, at St Alban's, Acton Green, Ealing, Msx, on 28 Oct 1916, William Edgar BACKWELL (a son of Richard John BACKWELL, a Mathematical Instrument Maker).
It was they who had the daughter, born at Hammersmith, London, in 1917, named Pauline Betty BACKWELL.
When William Edgar BACKWELL died at Pinner, Msx, in 1943, administration of his effects was granted to Barbara Mary BACKWELL, the widow, and Pauline Betty DONALD (the wife of Richard John DONALD), undoubtedly the daughter (she had married DONALD at Hendon, Msx, in 1941).
It appears that Barbara BACKWELL emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand - probably to live near her married daughter.
Regards,
Chris PIGOTT.
