Need help figuring out S. Italy surname

Post by elsantoro »

To my Father's best recollection, his Mother's maiden name was Seroti - but he knows that is not the correct spelling. He's 98 and has never seen it written down. He says it was a common Italian name.

She was born about 1902 on a ship en route to New York, that's all we know about her beginning.

At about 13 she married Pasquale Santoro in Ravenna, OH. I found his name on a passenger list and he was from Vieste, Foggia so her family may have been from there too. Pasquale died in 1918 and that left her a 16 year old widow so she changed her name to Mildred to sound more "American" and we don't know her original name. For a while she used her Stepfather's last name Artinio (also a guess on spelling).

Any ideas?

Thank you AGAIN! I came up blank again in more searches after your last post and this gives me another lead! I believe their port of passage was San Francisco. I remember hearing that Mildred was born on a ship between Italy and San Francisco and the only record I found for her later in life in a census listed her birth place as "California". I am hoping to find a passenger list that would list her as "baby" and possibly her original name.

I found a Census record for Tony and Rose and it lists a daughter, Malia age 10 in 1910. This might be Mildred! The age could be wrong or she could have fibbed about it later in life. This gives me a new direction to search.

Thank you for your help in this search. It's been tough with all of the misspellings. I'm trying to figure out what the correct names are as census and other record keepers seemed to just write their best guess and I don't believe my relatives spoke English.

Rose married at Tony Artino just in 1913... so the 1910 census that you found cannot be abt right Mildred...

Are you certain about her "southern Italy" origins?

Try variations of the surname spelling here http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... 3iZjCgpeno and you can see that the likely candidates are primarily central/northern in present-day Italy.

On Mildred's 1915 marriage record to Patsy Santoro, consent was given by a Luigi Lopriore who stated she was his ward. Another clue?
