"dei neri"
"dei neri"
My husband's grandfather came from the Torino area in about 1890. We were told his last name was "Locatto" but records I've found that seem to match (at least for his brothers and one sister) indicate their last name was Locati Dei Neri. What does "Dei Neri" mean after the Locati? Thanks.

"Dei Neri" literally means "of the Blacks." "Nero" is the word "black" in Italian and "neri" would be the plural of that word. Now whether this is referring to members of the Black race, I really can't say. The word "locati" means "leased" or "rented out."
