Looking for help on Genardo surname

Post by Juliablueeyes2006 »

I'm looking for information on my great-grandfather. His name was James Genardo. All my grandmother (his daughter) knows abut his past is that he arrived in New Orleans from Palermo, Sicily. I've searched for every immigration record I can get access to for fee, and I can't find anything remotely close. He was born in 1894 and had to have gotten here before 1925.

Are there alternative spellings of his first and last name I should be looking for? The only information I have on him is that he was born on a farm near the sea, Marinello, and it was governed by the town Patti.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

James is often an Americanization of Vincenzo.

The surname Genardo does not seen to exist in modern Italy though there is currently a single listing in the Italian telephone directory for Gennardo with two n's.

"De Nardo" is a real possibility however unlikely that may seem.

You can find 16 pages of "G" surnames here http://www.cognomix.it/origine-cognomi-italiani.php?l=g - The Ge's begin on page 5. This list is almost certainly not exhaustive, but a good representation.

You can judge the prevalence of a given surname here http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... e=de+nardo

Is this your James?

If so, consider spending $10 to get a copy of his naturalization records from the National Archives. These should include the name of the ship and date when he arrived in the US and the full name which he traveled under.

Begin here https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/ Click Order Reproductions, then Immigration and Naturalization records and follow the remaining prompts. When you get to the "Please provide any additional information ..." box, enter the information from the card above.

The surname I am seeing in the Patti Italian records' indices is Gelardi, which on some passenger lists is recorded as Gelardo.

Below is a list of the frazioni or hamlets of Patti, one of which may be from where your ancestor came. You will note that Marinello itself is one of those frazioni.

Camera, Case Nuove Malluzzo, Case Nuove Russo, Gallo, Madoro, Marinello, Mongiove, Moreri, Provenzani, San Cosimo, Scala, Scarpiglia, Sorrentini, Tindari

The Gennardi surname (with two n's) was found in the town of Mussomeli in Caltanissetta, Sicily in the 1890s. There is no Vincenzo born there in 1894 though. Quite a distance from Patti. The online Patti birth records jump from 1893 to 1896, but the surname there is Gelardi.

Johnny, this is my James. I've seen the naturalization record that ended up being approved, but it doesn't tell me anything about when he immigrated here. He's the short branch on my family tree. I get stuck on him because I don't know the names of his parents or his siblings. They were a Catholic family, so I'm betting he had siblings.

Unfortunately, I don't have the names of his parents or siblings. That's why I decided to ask for help here. He's as far as I can trace on that side of my family.

I'm not sure about the 1920 census, but I am sure that the 1930 census is my family. I just wish I could find who his parents were.
