here's another record:
http://s28.postimg.org/gw2mqtzr1/1816_T ... nt0001.jpg
this one is just about Orsola Barile, no groom mentioned.
however, the similarity between this and the previous post is the term "per la stato libero"... would this account for the single names mentioned in the record? what might it refer to.
thanks,
donna

Re: marriage promise, part 2
I am sure that the words "per la stato libero" (for the free state) on these marriage banns is another way of saying that they are single (wanting confirmation from the public that the respective person is in fact free to marry - not currently married?). Before my parents were married they both had to present documents entitled "Certificato di Stato Libero" which were stamped in their home towns about three months prior to their wedding. Maybe different towns require different documents?

That form, which was to serve as the marriage bann, it was instead used as a declaration of a state of free of Orsola Barile, age 38, peasant, residing in Tufo, adult daughter of the deceased Andrea and Angiola Troisi.dmt1955 wrote:here's another record:

This is the reason why you can not find the name of the future groom. The act refers only to the future bride, testifies that she was free from the marriage bond.
Re: marriage promise, part 2
thank you Marcello & Angela for your help. Of all the years I have researching, this is the first time I have seen this declaration of 'state of free.'

You are welcome
Re: marriage promise, part 2
Marcello is correct. Per lo stato libero is the current marital status of the woman involved. In fact, when my first Carta d'Identita (ID card) was issued to me in Italy in 2001, stato Libero was indicated on my card because I was not married. Recently, however due to privacy rights, marital status is no longer indicated on the ID cards and my current card does not list it even though I'm still unmarried.

jennabet,
thanks for sharing your experience with this. i am curious as to what made marital status an important piece of data on something like an ID card.

dmt1955, aside from it being a cultural practice, I really don't know. Maybe Marcello can weigh in on the reason for it. Marcello?
