Are you looking for an Italian surname? Do you need more information about your family heritage?
This is the right place to start your genealogy search.
I am searching for members of the Musa Family originally from Soragna, Italy who settled in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NYC in the late 1880s.
The patriarch was Guglielmo (William) Musa. He was my great-grandfather.
He had three children:
Luigi
Giuseppe -known as Joseph
and
Maria known as Mamie and/or Mary
Luigi was married to Palmira and they had four children (five with one dying as a very young child).
Their children were Peter, Clara, Rose and Agnes.
Joseph died young in 1918 at the age of 37 years. He was a victim of the Influenza Pandemic. Joseph was married to a Maria and the two had at least four children.
Mamie was my grandmother. She married a Detroit Gardella whose family was from Neirone.
I located Luigi Musa and his marriage to Palmira Bellingeri on 4/11/1902 in Brooklyn, NY Marriage Cert #2229. I would like to get your inquiry in order. Are you building a family tree? Peter
Thank you! Yes, I would like to build a family tree.
I am the only one left of the third generation as my grandparents, their children and all of their grandchildren save me have died. I was born late in my father's life.
what are your research objectives? Do you mean to go back as far back as possible from the USA to Soragna Italy? If so then you know everyone here by name and relationships so you will want to obtain information in Italy. If so may I suggest that for starters that you obtain or borrow the book titled Italian Genealogical Records by Trafford R. Cole which is an easy read and has illustrations of documents you will be seeking from that town of origin in Italy. Peter
for now, I only want to document the US family. The US family knew many hardships as my father and his siblings were in orphanages for many years.
None of them spoke of this and none were angry people, rather they were loving and kind.
Once I get a handle on the US family, I will, indeed, look further into our Italian roots and will certainly take your advice about the Cole book.
Thank you,
You might look at Guglielmo Musa New York, Naturalization Petitions, 1794-1906 they made a correction to his name for it was Musa Guglielmo and it was corrected to Guglielmo Musa

I am very happy to receive any and all information! Thank you both.
Interesting enough on my great uncle's death certificate recently obtained from the NYC Municipal Archives (he died of the Spanish Flu in 1918), his mother's names were transposed; that is her last name was used as her first name.
By the way. Decades ago I had Nonno's name placed on the Immigrant Wall at Ellis Island. It cost $100.00 for each name and this was in the late 1980s. I wanted to place all of my ancestor's names on the wall but I could not do so financially. I chose Nonno as he was the one who returned to NYC from Italy to take my father and his siblings out of the orphanages. I never knew Nonno but his great commitment and love for his family lived on.

Where did you find this court order that corrected my Great Grandfather's name? I am trying to print a copy but can not.
Grazie.

Very few works have been published in English on the topics of Italian heraldry, nobility and onomatology as these relate to genealogy. Yet all three fields depend upon genealogical research. This concise presentation is not intended as a historical treatise, but rather as a simple guide for those i...
