Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
I found an unusual looking surname while attempting to find out which maiden name the mother of my great great grandmother had. My great great grandmother, Norma Ghio, is in this record named Norma Virga because she had married Francesco (I think later Frank) Virga, so I assumed this is regarding the same person I have in mind:

The last name of her mother has me confused, as it is not a name that comes up through online searches, so I also assumed that it was misspelled. Can anybody identify which last name this corresponds to, or which ones it closely resembles? Thank you!

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
My thoughts are that someone spelled this as they heard it...
Surname may be CROSILLA.
This surname, as well as surname GHIO, are found in Trieste.

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Yes, Crosilla could be it, thank you. I ran into another surname I was unsure about, written in a death record as Pucho. I'm almost certain that was meant to be Puccio. There was also Catanaza, but that seems to correspond with the name Catanese. As for Norma Ghio, I believe that she was from Liguria, either Genoa or a part of the comune of Sestri Levante. Her mother could possibly have been from around Trieste, though.Tessa78 wrote:My thoughts are that someone spelled this as they heard it...

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Yes, the records look consistent with the family I have in mind. I am actually a descendant of Frank's and Norma's daughter, Angelina Katheryn. The record there appears to be that of Norma's daughter, also named after her, and her marriage to a man. I have difficulty reading his surname, though.PippoM wrote:Is this the family you are referring to?

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Groom's name is Andrew Zuanich.
Norma remained widow and married again in 1929:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1804002
Her age is stated to be 18 in 1923, and 22 in 1929, so, born in 1905-1907.
She MIGHT be the daughter of a woman born in 1891, but hen mother must have been very young.

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
If this is your Frank Virga:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1861144
they married really young!
According to USA 1940 census, if this is the right family:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=2000219
he was 49, and she 46.

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Thank you, they both seem to be correct. I hope there are no pieces to this mystery I am missing, otherwise making them the wrong connection to my family, but I doubt it.
Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Maybe I found her Ellis Island manifest:
http://libertyellisfoundation.org/passe ... 5pZmVzdCI7
Her name was indexed as "Nortria".
Travelling with mother Beatrice Rosa Ghio (unfortunately, she is listed with her married name) from Porto Venere (province of La Spezia), and siblings Annita, Dario and Guglielma; going to meet father Lorenzo in San Francisco.

Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Thank you very much! I have found this information to be very helpful. Up until almost a year ago, I did not know about more than one Italian surname in my family (my own last name), and since then, I have tried to research as much as possible about the different directions my family tree takes. There is only a certain amount of information I could get without premium membership in a genealogical website.
Re: Crozlia: Misspelled Surname?
Tessa, could you please remind me what exactly the notations are?
