Ok, simple question.
I came across this as being in my family line, and, as usual, I checked in the Italian phone books to see if the spelling is off, and it seems like it, since there isn't a "Virizi" in all of Italy.
So, what's the best bet of what the proper spelling of the surname is?
I've checked all of the "Virizzi" and "Virrizi" and "Verizi" and "Virezi" and "Vinizi", but i'm coming up with blanks.
Thanks,
J

Note: The town is Arbëresh, and the person would have been born 1781-1804 (using 17-40 as an age bracket for the earliest born).
Maybe it is Varisi?
Could family names actually die off?

Ok... do some more scratching...
How about Varesi?... common in the north though...

Wow... you're at the 1700's? I went to www.familysearch.org and searched Varisi... and only got one (from the 1500's)... but the Ellis Island data gave me a few...
One of my ancestral surnames was shortened only because the Comune record keepers ( father -mayor & sons) shortened it themselves...

There were just a handful of Novelli's in my ancestral town... and some of them met with tragic circumstance... all that was left ... were the Novelli women ... so ... end of that surname...Could family names actually die off?

Re: Surname: Virizi
I suggest it might be Virzì.
If you look at phone boook at this address:

you have to write Virzi'.
