re:passenger record for salvatore landino

Post by mezzogiorno62 »

salvatore landino died in new york city in 1884.according to his death information he had resided in the us-probably new york city-for 12 years.this would mean he immigrated, most likely through ellis island, about 1872 give or take a year.maybe even a few years one way or the other,as he married his second wife in palermo in 1865 and had children born here by 1875.but even allowing for the time period,i find nothing remotely close to him for information.he was born about 1820 in palermo,so he would have been around 50 when he immigrated, give or take a year.i checked every possible name spelling variation possible allowing for errors-landino,laudino,lidino,ladino,etc.nothing.landino was the original spelling.any help or suggestions would be most welcome.thanks

This might be him. It doesn't give a lot of information but sounds like it fits? You will need to dig further to confirm. Good luck with that.

S Landino, Immigrated 1870, Arrived Philadelphia, age 47, male, estimated birth year 1823, born Italy, ship Brig.Courrier

thanks.its odd that this didnt appear at ancestry as its very clearly a salvatore landino and the ancestry search covered all us ports.wondering how it is that theres only a card for him,and he's not a part of the manifest sheet.a few years off agewise-47 rather than 50-but thats not an issue.if i can locate the complete manifest at ancestry that might be proof as his wife came with him and that will identify him as correct as i know the wifes name.thanks again

i just checked philadelphia passenger records at ancestry.i can't find salvatore landino.couple of landino's-but no salvatore.how did you find it?if family search has it so should ancestry.the records should match.and there should be a manifest page not just a card.i wonder what happened to the manifest? the entry for this says j.landino not s.landino.could be an s but looks like a j could be the correct subject but his wifes surname was novara and she came with him.nothing there for the surname novara.

Happy to help.

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com so unless I am researching at a Library which has a subscription, I normally stick to Family Search at home, which I prefer anyway. I can't exactly remember the steps I took earlier to find this but normally what I would do is enter the exact info that I know and if nothing looks obvious then I vary the spellings and go broad with the age and/or date range. It didn't take too long too find.

I'm not sure at the moment about the manifest either. This may be your Salvatore or it may not. It needs further research.

I notice that you say here:

I have come across the following which may also be the family you are looking for, if Salvatore's wife's given name was Maria:

Daughter Matilda Landino, born 13 September 1882, Manhattan, new york
Father Salvatore Landino, born italy, age 62, estimated birth 1820
Mother Mary Navora, born italy, age 42, estimate birth 1840

yes.thats him.i have ancestry world at my local library so i use that as well as family search/lds.we pretty much do the same things.try all possible name spelling variations of a name.normally the only alternate spelling is laudino, although in searching for the death record of his son, francesco, who for years i thought died in sicily, actually appears to have died in new york under the name lidino.if the surname is close and the first name is correct and the age matches closely, theres a good chance the subject is correct.3 generations of landino's died in new york.salvatore in 1884(1st wife rosalia died in palermo in 1865 and it appears salvatore immediately married the much younger maria novara),francesco in 1889,and his son salvatore in 1937.its hard enough to find some of these records, but the surname misspellings are a constant stumbling block.and landino is a pretty hard name to misspell.pretty simple.i checked philadelphia passenger lists and it appears there are no manifests like new york or boston.just index cards.francesco and his son salvatore both came through new york.francesco appears to have come in 1889,dying 13 days later, and salvatore in 1893.francesco was the real missing link in the puzzle.although not formally married to maria bonarrigo, they appear to have lived common law and had at least 3 natural children in barcellona, messina sicily, between 1872 and 1880.francesco was born in palermo in 1851 and maria in gualtieri sicamino messina in 1847.maria was the wetnurse of my paternal grandmother, also maria, who was born ignoti genitori(unknown parents)although francesco and maria were possibly her real parents if they weren't married in a civil ceremony.a church marriage alone wouldn't be sufficient, and children born in these circumstances could be considered illegitimate.very strange some of these customs and attitudes.maria bonarrigo came to boston in 1902 with her adoptive daughter,my grandmother, but died a few days after arrival.her death record in boston states she was married, but that was incorrect as francesco had died 13 years earlier in new york in 1889.i had previously though francesco died in sicily, which would explain why he didnt precede maria to boston or join her there(oldest son salvatore lived in boston at that time)but it appears new york city was the final resting polace of 3 generations of landino men-salvatore,francesco,and salvatore.note:salvatore committed suicide by poison in 1884.evidently he was a very abusive husband and had attacked and severely injured his wife.he fled and the police apprehended him.as they were escorting him to the police station he ingested some cyanide and died shortly afterwards.there is a big article in the new york times regarding this story.july 1884.
