Birth and marriage certificate of great-grandparents - Surname: Pescuma; origin: Venosa, Potenza

Post by Danica_Wales »

Hi all!
I'm a Brazilian living in Wales, UK and
I'm trying to get hold of my great-grandparents's birth and marriage certificates.
I know their names and where they lived, but I haven't got (exact) dates.
The names are Emanuele Pescuma (or Pescinna) and Antonia Maria Galipola(or Garipela). They were from (or at least lived in) Venosa, Potenza and left for Brasil from Genova, on a ship called "Minas", between December 1901 and February 1902. He had his wife and three children with him: Maria Rosaria (9 y.o. ), Angelo (5 y.o.) and Maria (1 )y.o.

Has anyone got the same surname or know anything about this family back in Venosa? Or a family tree?

Please let me know!

Many, many thanks!
Grazie mille! :)

Glad to help! :D

The links I provided above are for free site Family Search
https://familysearch.org/

There are online records for Venosa (in Italian) from about 1861 - 1929
https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D1483052

I think the birth record for Emmanuele is incorrect. Wrong parents based on his marriage record. :(

I will search again. :D

****
Marriage of parents of Antonia Maria Garripoli on 26 October 1863
Biase Angelo Raffaele Garripoli was age 38, peasant farmer son of deceased Vito, and of deceased Anna Maria Belluscio
Mattia Mastrangelo was age 39, daughter of Domenico and of Rosa Di Chirico

Hi Tessa!

Thanks a million for that! I've tried doing searches on the familysearch.org website, but all my searches are coming back with no results.. I might be doing something wrong... I'm looking for the birth certificate of my grandfather, son of Emmanuele Pescuma and Antonia Maria Garripoli, who was born in Brasil, on 4th January 1904 in Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo. We can't find his birth certificate anywhere. We've looked for it in four different registry offices. He got married to Regina Lombardi on 6th June 1925 in Ururai, Sao Paulo, but it could have also been in Santa Adelia, Sao Paulo. Regina's parents were Joao Lombardi and Rosalia Capucci (Brazilian names, I imagine).

Do you think you can help me find it? Or at least point me in the right direction so I can research myself? :)

Thanks, again.

Hi Dani! :-)

You are probably getting no hits because you are using the database search (filling in the blanks with name, etc.)

You will need to search the records themselves as some (usually the ones in another language) are not indexed by record.
I will tell you how to do that.

But first, do you know the name of the parish church in Ribeirao Preto in which your grandfather was baptized? I have found some records for two churches... Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Sebastião.

I will search both using the date of birth you gave me.

BTW - what was your grandfather's given name? did I miss it somewhere in the posts?

I have been searching the Catholic Church records in Ribeirao Preto, but have not found your GF.. It appears that they often did not have their children baptized within a week of the birth. Some were baptized months after. I have covered page by page the records for January - March 1904, but have not found him...

As to the method of searching.
When you open the search page in FamilySearch you will see "Search Historical Records" (this is where you fill in the blanks) and you will see "Research by Location" If you choose the Location option you will see lists of the collections and can choose a country, etc. You are looking for the "image only" records, not the ones that are indexed.

Within that you may also have choices - AND you will eventually "Browse the records."
Most are sorted by years and types of records and that is where you will need to search.

Here is the link you will get if you choose to search Brazil records...
Scroll down on this link to see the list of image only records for Brazil.

Hi Tessa! Thanks a million again for that.

I went there and spent most part of the night researching (am exhausted this morning.. :)), but as I was doing it on my mobile phone, it wasn't so efficient. hehe
Do you think you could also find the death certificates of Emmanuele Pescuma and Antonia Maria Garripoli? Perhaps it would help us find my GF's birth certificate... I've got my grandpa's marriage and death certificate, if you'd like to see it. It could help?

Sorry, I'm asking so many questions/favours...

Thanks! Do I need to register?

Is it going to be public for everyone to see? Can I delete it after you see it?

If you wish, you can post it in a PM (private message to me) - that way you do not have to delete from this public forum...

You can use the Private messages link next to your sign-in above.

To use postimage - I do not believe you have to register...

Thank you.
I will look through them to see if they offer any additional information that may help in the search for his birth record.

Do you have the approx. dates of death for his parents?
