Musicao/Musico Family

Post by mkukiela »

I am trying to find information about my great-grandmother Caterina Musicao Tripiciano, who according to the Ellis Island website made the journey to NY in 1902.
I found Giuseppa, Iaolo(which I believe is Paolo or Paul) and Caterina made the journey to the U.S. in 1902 on the vessel The Umbria. However, it lists their "Last place of Residence/Birthplace as "Siuliana". I have read the document and the fancy cursive script used clearly denotes an "S" but the only city in Sicily I can find close to that name is Giuliana. Giuliana is a commune in the province of Palermo. Heretofore I was told by family members she was from Messina.

Looking closer at the list...above Giuseppa is the name of Giuseppe Lauri whose occupation was a tailor. It also lists Giuseppa as his wife. These must have been transposed as I understand the wife traveled under their maiden names and Lauri was Giuseppa's maiden name. These would have been Caterina's parents or my great-great-grandparents.

Giuseppa and Giuseppe are buried in our local cemetery as Musicao's, but Caterina's brother Paolo began using the name Musico and is buried as such. However in Italy, I believe the Musicao would be the surname I am searching for.

From this point I have tried to research birth records for Caterina which I believe she would have been born around 1886. What is the best way to search for a birth record or better yet to find where the Musicao's lived when they were in Sicily? Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated.

Marty...
That is very interesting! The same name indeed, but from what I gather my great grandmother was born in 1887, so she would have been 29 not 38 as shown here. It's fascinating to see the "Tripiciano" written above her name though...

Gee Marty,

Thank you so much! This has to be her. Looking at the second page, S. Division Street is were they lived. I am confused by the people she was traveling with, perhaps cousins of my great-grandfather Antonio Tripiciano. I never knew she went back and then returned.

*UPDATE*
According to my cousin Pete she was traveling with her two children but using their middle names on the passenger list. I am trying to find out now why she went back. Thank you for the tip.

Ann,

I have tried to search the 28 years of birth records (Nati) in Siculiana but the years seem to skip from 1884 to 1889, and my Caterina was purportedly born in 1887. Can you suggest any further resources?

Write to the town. They usually have a complete set of records. The LDS filmed at the State Archives who only received the second copy (if one was prepared at the time!)

Thank you Marty,

They must have lived in New York City before coming to Auburn. I believe I had dismissed this previously since I never knew they lived there. But those are definitely the names and the age seems correct for Giuseppe, though Giuseppa should have been about 44 at the time.

Though...on the 1902 Ship manifest at Ellis Island's site it shows there was only a two year age difference. The Interment listing at our local cemetery shows a 7 year age gap. This census shows they were the same age...?

I am not sure if I can help but I spent today at the NYC Municipal Archives looking for my grandmother's birth certificate. She was born Maria MUSA sometime between 1885 and 1890 in NYC. I haven't quite found her birth certificate but I am going back to the Municipal Archives in NYC to search more. I live in NYC so this is not much trouble for me.

I did note whilst searching for a Musa that a few Musico names came up.

If your family had had any births, marriages, deaths in NYC, let me know as I would be happy to research on site, your family as well as mine.

There is no cost at all to research in person names at the Municipal archives.
