Manifest help - handwriting

Post by vj »

I need help reading a name on a ship manifest from Ellis Island.

I've used a magnifying glass, I've whited-out everything around it.
I'm stuck.

Passenger Record: Domenico Pasliaro (really Pagliaro)
Arrival: Aug 15, 1905
Ship: Prinzess Irene

The name I'm stuck on is under 'going to join relative':

I read it as " brother-in-law Pietro _______
Clark St at #73 Trenton"

Wishful thinking would be Pietro Felice, Domenico's sister's husband, but I don't think so.
(Domenico and his sister Rosina Pagliaro immigrated together in 1896)

Otherwise this could be a clue to Domenic's wife's maiden name.
Since he doesn't appear on any Trenton Census (or anywhere else that I can find after 1910) maybe I can chip away at this brick wall.

Opinions always welcome!

Thank you, Valarie

check out the manifest for Rosina PAGLARO arriving on the Fulda on March 24 1896. See Lines 26, 27, 28, 29, 30. It looks like she's traveling with her husband Alfonso Spaletta, their child, her brother Bruno and their father Domenico.

Mind you, I'm not psychic but that's what it looks like to me. LOL

But... Spaletta may not be her husband...

If you look at line 22 for example.... this woman is also a wife... but to whom? Not to the person listed above her name....

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 2879130196

I think they just used the word "wife" to show the record that she was married... If this Rosina's child was a Spaletta, it would say Teresina Spaletta... just my opinion.

Also, this manifest doesn't say whether Rosina and Domenico were siblings...

Looks like Rosina was going to Trenton... and Domenico to New York.

First Name: Rosina
Last Name: Paglaro
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence:
Date of Arrival: Mar 24, 1896
Age at Arrival: 27y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Hindoustan
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0027

trust me, you're better at this than I am. I try to find a positive link if I suspect someone may be connected. I searched around a little for Spaletta and couldn't find anything that connects to Pagliaro.

Glad it helped! You may not remember this but you found my father for me. Which was OUTSTANDING!!!!

Maria and Eyetalgal,
Wow! You all have been busy. I should have set my alarm this morning.

- on the original question, I will check out 'Pietro Frizani' that's one I missed!

- on the questions on the 1896 manifest for Rosina (Paglaro), Teresino
(Pageliaro), Bruno (Pagliaro) and Domenico (Pugliaro)
They're all Pagliaro's
In 1900 they're all on the NJ Census living with Pietro Felice (Filici) in Trenton:
- Rosina wife, Teresa daughter, Domenico brother-in-law, Bruno cousin
This connects Domenico and Rosina. Isn't it great when this happens!

I can't connect Domenico to my Pagliaro's yet. That's why I'm looking for his wife's maiden name - I'll try tracking her family back using 'Frazini'.
Too many coincidences same part of Trenton, apparently same part of Italy, same name...

Bruno moved to CT w/o Domenico. Well documented, but no connection (yet) other than 'cousin'
I have taken the time to build them into separate databases hoping to connect them to my Pagliaro's

I appreciate all of your time and effort
U R terrific
Thank you!

Thanks for the extra lead.
I'm still checking. I'm switching between ancestry & ships manifests with your suggestions. (if I'd spring for broadband I guess I wouldn't have to wait for downloads)

How about "F U M I N O or Fumina" "F O M I N A" or "F U N I N O" "F U N I N A" or similar... The last vowel usually had an accent on it...

The names Pagliaro, Felice or Filici are all common in the city of Rogliano... (City of Santo Stefano di Rogliano: Calabria Region)

p.s. still looking...

mfjb,
Thanks again for looking.
I have a page full of variations - I missed yours!
I was searching the F'r' sounds-like on the Steve Morse site last night and fell asleep on my keyboard.
My biggest hope is to connect these Pagliaro's, Felice's and LePiane's to my Pagliaro's and Gatto's. If not I've got a bunch of research on a non-related family I can share.
This group of names was also pretty common in Pittsburgh.
Pagliaro = works with straw... I think
Anything I can do for you please let me know.
I was working on a couple of phishfood's questions today.
Thanks again!
Valarie
