5 Bis

Post by ray1955 »

I can not remember what 5 bis instead of a catalog number means?

Does anyone know I have been up and down the card catalog trying to find a
document. Never found it but it was supposed to be located at number 5
with bis in small letters.

Sicilian marriage documents.

"bis" means "again." So there were 2 records, labeled 5 and 5 bis. I would expect to find it between 5 and 6.

What card catalog are you searching? Is this at a library?

It may also be the notation for a repeat of the name of the month of birth.
Some record indexes do not provide the record # but give a date of birth...
Look above it in the column and see if you are reading a column of dates rather than record #s..

Can you provide the link to the Ancestry record?
