demaria or pronesti family in calabria...
Hello -
After much family research, I am hoping to visit Calabria this summer. I am looking to get any information on living relatives that we may be able to get in touch with when we are there.
My great-grandparents were Carmelo DeMaria and Angela Pronesti, both of Calabria. I believe he was from Molochio and her family was from Radicena. Here is some additional information...
Carmelo DeMaria (born 1884)
Father: Frank (?) DeMaria
Mother: Catherine Mustico
Angela Pronesti (born 1885)
Father: Frank Pronesti
Mother: Maria Faletti
Any assistance or ideas on how I can get more information would be greatly appreciated. '
Thank you!
Jenn

Hello -
Wow...thank you so much! I was able to locate a general document that showed the english translation, however it is difficult to understand. I understand the basic wording...and dates, however where did you find in Angela's birth record her parents occupations? I'd like to be able to find the occupations of other family members with similar documents. I'm also curious if Carmelo's birth record told of his parents occupations?

In the documents suanj posted and translated... look for these words after the person's age:where did you find in Angela's birth record her parents occupations?
agricoltore - farmer
tessitrice - seamstress
bracciale - laborer
bovaro - cowherd

Here are some resources to help you translate documents and identify occupations

Re: demaria or pronesti family in calabria...
i was thinking more about the occupations that you helped identify. i think i was a little surprised that the women had occupations other than housewife. was it common for women to have other occupations outside of the home? or were these not really jobs they did outside of the home? maybe just farming their own land? or sewing their own clothes?
i suppose for the men too, were these jobs working for other people...or things they did for themselves? i know it's hard to say for sure...but generally speaking, what was the culture at that time?
can is assume that farming and animals were common occupations for these cities in calabria?

Re: demaria or pronesti family in calabria...
if the woman had a profession before to marry, she continued to work also after the marriage, to help the family...
that for any profession, any work that the woman did....
and the women worked at home or outside of the home; at home, normally the work was women's crafts (embroidery, sewing, bakery, laundry, ironing, spinning) or other works.. outside of home the women was farmers, mainly...
if the woman don't had a profession before to marry, but she was just a housewife, she remained a housewife....
but if the husband's earned income was enough for the family and/or the husband don't wanted that the wife work outside of the home, she remained at home, doing housework and taking care of children and family....
the occupations of men and women was abt the same in all Italy, because in each town or village was coppersmiths, goldsmiths, fishermen, farmers, shoemakers, shepherds, tailors, carders, drovers, masons, shopkeepers, bakers etc etc as a well the women embroiderers, washerwomen, seamstress, spinners and farmers etc etc..
because in each town and village the people need of all ... the towns and the villages are and was on the coast, it is obvious that the trades were also about fisheries, but if the towns or villages are and was in the plains or hillside, the people obviously mainly they work in agriculture and livestock, if they were small mountain villages the population working more closely with the livestock and products derived from the meat and milk processing...
where there were some industry, factory, the men working also and sometimes also the women, but at North Italy..
but about a country like Italy that has had a massive migration, it is logical to think that either there is little job and also few resources or money, and if it was job, it was badly paid and families could not survive..
Best regards,
suanj
