Napoli

Post by tomtst »

I am trying to search microfilm records for my Sgueglia family from Napoli. The problem I have is searching on the Family Search (LDS) site there are many options for Napoli. I pasted the link below, what town listed would be the closest to downtown Napoli? I know there are Sgueglia's in Caserta but I don't think that is actually Napoli.

https://familysearch.org/search/collect ... gion=Italy

Thanks
Tom

Hi,
the best option is to know the right Commune of Birth by your ancestor arrival record, or naturalization record or WWI draft registration card record.. otherwise it is a big problem... the large number of Sgueglia immigrants in USA coming from the communes in Caserta province... best regards,

Thank You suanj, All those documents just say Naples. I am trying to determine which of those comunes / churches are closest to the heart of Naples because that is where I believe they were from. I don't think my family was from Caserta, at least not my great grandparents.

Hi Tom,
if you say us the name of your ancestor maybe we can help better... many italian immigrants said Naples because is the capital of Campania region, but many coming from other areas of campania region.. but Naples is the main town, most famous, who don't knew Naples....? So to say Naples was to say a commune in Campania region.... however if you wish, knowing the your ancestor name we can help better!
Best regards,

My great grandfather was Roberto Sgueglia married to Giuseppina Galise. Roberto's brother was Enrico Sgueglia married to Concetta Nicolai. Im pretty sure they were from right in Naples. My grandmother had gone back at one time to visit the area and her brother had also gone back to see some carvings that were done by Enrico in the local churches. Many of them were woodcarvers. I did send a letter to the town hall but never received a reply. Maybe if I concentrate on Galise or Nicolai I may find an exact comune listed on something.

I have an obit. of Anna Sgueglia that lists her children as Gennaro, Roberto, Carlo, Giuseppe, Errico (Probably Enrico), Adele, Giulia.

Yes, I have ship records, naturalization records, census records, and they all just say Naples. I remembered some newspaper pages from I think Naples my grandmother saved they are in rough shape but if I can find the reason she saved them or the name of the paper It may help.

Thank you for the help

Is Roberto's (or one of his siblings') father ever mentioned?

I have nothing that shows Roberto's (b:1868) father's name. I have what I think is his mothers obit in Italian. The translation is below.
"Thursday, 8 current, peacefully, as she lived, died Mrs Anna Sgueglia
Loving and exemplary mother, she spent her life in favour of the children she loved so much and who now weep bitterly.
Our deepest condolences to our dearest friend Gennaro Sgueglia and to (his) brothers Roberto, Carlo, Giuseppe, Errico, and (his) sisters Adele and Giulia".

She died in italy, I don't know when.
Her son Roberto was born in Naples 1868 died in US 1944
Enrico born in Naples 1880 died in US 1946

Roberto Came to US about 1902 so she probably died between 1880 and 1902. Assuming they're in Italy when she died.
Enrico arrived in 1910
