I would appreciate some help understanding document #7.
If I understand, the bride, Ma. Teresa Ferraro is 16 yrs. Colomba Annichiarico is counsel to her. There are some words I cannot spell out....Does this explain why she might need special counsel if her parents are alive? Or, am I misinterpreting something?
Thanks, donna

Re: document included in marriage act
I could be wrong on this. Donna, but I think the procuratrice, Colomba, had power of attorney and appeared in place of the young bride at the marriage, even though the bride had the consent of her parents to marry. It was they who authorized her to name this woman.

The word I've been trying to decipher with no luck is on the bottom of the first page, second line from the bottom, the first word on the left before the word sposa. Do you have any idea what that word is? I believe it is describing the bride and thought it might be a clue as to why a proxy was needed. I've read that proxies would be used if someone was away in the military or if one of the spouses lived in a distant or foreign place. I don't see in the document that this bride lived elsewhere, so I just can't figure out why a proxy would be needed for her marriage. I thought that maybe the word before sposa might be an adjective describing her and thus would give us insight as to the reason. I've never seen this before.

Erudita and Donna: I think the word preceding sposa is "futura".

I think you are correct about the word futura. I just couldn't decipher that word yesterday. Do you see anything else that I might have missed that would indicate why a proxy was used?

Re: document included in marriage act
The only thing that I can think of, which might be a clue, is that it looks like the Church Wedding took place three days later. (I've not seen this before, in all my records the couple go off to the church straight after they have been to the Town Hall???) The bride was very young, maybe she was sick on the day, or maybe the parents didn't want them "together" until the marriage had taken place in the church. Donna does extremely well to read these records, they are not always the clearest - where the bride was living isn't so clear. It looks like she was living in the church - a convent maybe?erudita74 wrote:Angela

Edit: In hindsight, the address given is possibly Colomba's?

angela - erudita,
thanks so much for your help.
it is not unusual in reviewing these records that the marriage took place days later. i do not know what that means (if anything) other than it is common.
i did not see an address for Colomba, but b/c she is in my tree and somehow related to the groom (it's still a bit sketchy but I think an aunt), I do know she also lived in the same parish as the bride - San Giovanbattista. again, that may not mean anything.

Re: document included in marriage act
Sorry I couldn't be more help on this. Always happy to help. Do you still have the film out so that you can check on the respective allegati?

angela,
allegati do not begin until 1868 in Ariano, so, the marriage act is all i have. it's a great idea though.
thanks again for all your help. as you know, there are efforts that just stay in the "question mark" category. the good new is at least i know my interpretation was not only accurate but also confirmed. and that is quite good enough.

Re: document included in marriage act
Very well done, Donna, with the interpretion of the Act. I love the way these records continuously challenge us and we are learning something new from them all the time.
Re: the Allegati: You may have actually told me that before. My Allegati seem to start round about 1825 and 1830 in my main two towns which in most cases is fantastic, especially if there are records contained with them dating back to pre 1809. Sometimes though the pre 1809 Death Extract's don't contain a lot of info in them and they are just basically saying that the priest has looked for the record and not found it in his records. Such a let down after excitingly looking for the extract. What I'm finding at the moment though is that my early marriage records in one of my towns, while not having allegati, do actually list the parents names and the date that they died and sometimes other little surprises. So that is very good. (I'm just chatting now, Donna, you don't have to reply, otherwise this will end up a very loooong thread with misinfo.)

Re: document included in marriage act
-same here, angela. the early marriage records list dates of death for other, father, and previous spouse, for the most part. my wish is that there could have been a bit more consistency with this. then again, if the info was all there, then what what would be the (my) obsessive motivation to continuing this...granted, i say this as i bang my head on the table b/c i finally found my 6th GGM death record and it lists her husband, and children but not her parents!!
happy 4th!

Re: document included in marriage act
I can certainly relate to what you have said here. It seems to be happening to me a lot lately. It will soon be time to start writing letters to some parishes, or maybe going and exploring for myself! How exciting that would be:-0
Happy July Fourth! (BTW: I'm not American but I do always note July Fourth every year and am with you in spirit. Freedom is such a blessing.)
