My Italian Search

Post by LPeltier »

I will be traveling to Italy in 2 months and would like to have some information on my ancestors before I go. I have some information about my great-grandmother, Rosa Pretto (b - Oct. 9, 1888; Valdagno or Novale, Italy), and the names of her parents, Giovanni Pretto and Carolina Lora, but not much information beyond that. How should I begin my search for more information about the rest of her family (parents, brothers, sisters, etc)? Thank you in advance for your help!

What records do you have for your great, grandmother. Death certificate?
ship manifest? Census records?

Who did she marry? In Italy? Did she come to the USA? When? Where did she settle?

If you can provide some more information, hopefully we will find some information to help in your research.

Let us know......

Thank you everyone for the wonderful information! That is definitely her manifest! I believe Teressa is a cousin (based on the information my great-aunt gave me). Rosa wasn't married until she came into the US. She married Joseph Pala in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. Maybe the information I had was wrong and Rosa was from Cornedo. Does that change how I could find information on her family?

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to read the census information better? I can't read many of the columns.

Thanks again!

Yes, you need to know the town (comune) of birth in Italy to do research on her family.

Suggset getting as many US records that you can on her. Possible records that may confirm the town of Cornedo is her birth town or provide her birth town would be: birth records of her children, her death certificate, church records, marriage record ( application of marriage gives additional info that isn't on a marriage certificate).

Still checking. Will be back.

Did some checking.

There is a comune called Cornedo Vicentino, province of Vicenza & a comune called Cornedo all' Isareo, province of Bolzano. The province of Vicenza also has a comune called Valdagno & a hamlet called Novale which is part of the comune of Valdagno, so I think you want the first for her birth act.

While obtaining US records, you may want to order film for her birth act ( born in Cornedo Vicentino), available from your local LDS-Family History Center (Mormans).

Here is a link to the films.

1920 census for her brother is light. Can send email, but it may not be any better. Just pm me & provide email address.

Hope this helps. :) :)

Thanks again for the info jcsm400! Where on the Draft card image is the information about Joseph? It looks like another manifest to me.

I can't wait until I can get to the Family History center!
