Sereno from Calabria

Post by legnoduro »

Hello
I am looking for any information about my grandfather Amidio (He alternately spelled his name Amedeo & Emidio and was called Michael in english.) Sereno. Born in 1888 in Fagnano-Castello, Cosenza of Francesco Sereno and Filomena Rinaldo. He claims he entered the US in 1908 but I cannot find any listing of him from any of the usual ports of entry. Family rumor has it that he came through South America and might have been a foundling. He declared his parents names and birth city on his US Social Security application and I am wondering if these were foster, adoptive or his biological parents. Any hints as to where to go from here would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

LDS (Mormans) have films for the town of Fagnano-Castello, Italy

Civil registration records 1809-1910

Link to the available films:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

Link to locate your nearest FHC:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

You can rent the appropriate film for his birth act. The rental fee is about $5.50/5.75 for about a month. Each center has the equipment to view the records & also to make copies.

Hope this helps.

Your welcome!

Where did your Amido (Michael) Sereno settle in the US? Do you have him on census records?

I have a record of him on the 1920 census taken in Elizabeth, NJ. It is here that he reveals that he entered in 1908. It is also on this census that his name is spelled Amidio. He is listed here with his wife and his first two daughters, my aunt and my mother. I tried to search the 1910 census records but have had no luck. I have tried the Ellis Island site search, the Philadelphia records and the Boston records but to no avail. How could he have arrived without a record of him? I also have his marriage certificate which shows he was in Elizabeth in 1916. On this certificate his first name is spelled Emidio. Thank you so much for your interest and help.

I saw that manifest but according to his Social Security application he said his mother's name was Filomena not Giovanna. The Philadelphia connection would otherwise make sense. The other problems I have is his birth place and residence. Although Cosenza is not that far from Chieti and I guess he could have traveled to Abruzzi but he declared that he was born in Fagnano Castello.

Not all manifests are online. There is also the problem of transcribing errors, missed linked manifests, etc, etc. So he is listed somewhere!

Will keep poking around.

You may want to pm member vj. She is really good at finding manfest. Tell her about the Philly one above, so she knows you are looking for another one.

Hopefully you will find his birth act record in Fagnano-Castello

Good luck with your research & keep us posted.
