Spokes - Tarantino family in New Orleans

Post by NooAwlins »

I'm looking for help on the Tarantino family in New Orleans, Louisiana. Nicolo Tarantino and Rosa Manfre had at least five children in New Orleans between 1867 and 1878. They were: Mary, Francis, Frank a.k.a. "Chick", Catherine a.k.a "Katie", and Girolamo Guiseppe.

Frank a.k.a. "Chick" Tarantino married Florence Fernandez in New Orleans 14 Jan 1894 and had at least eight children. Catherine a.k.a. "Katie" Tarantino married Frank Spucches (a.k.a. Frank Spokes) in New Orleans in 1891.

There are Tarantinos and Manfres from Ustica connected to New Orleans and San Francisco. But I can't connect them to my line. I'm also aware of a Father Tarantino somewhere in south Louisiana. I have birth and death records from Louisiana, but none of them indicate their original town or village in Sicily.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,
you need to look for manifest ship list of Nicolo Tarantino ans Rosa Manfre, there you find the town they came from, or request their naturalization records, so you find right place and date of birth, plus date of departure, port of departure, port of entry and name of ship

Riccardo is correct, you should try to find their ship manifest and naturalization records.

Here is a link that may help in locating the manifest if they arrivaed at the Post of New Orleans.

Also, if you know were they are buried & the cemetry is associated with a church, check the church records. Many times you can find town of origin through church records.

Do you have them on census records?

Hope this helps.

However they came from Ustica.. this is sure now from 1870 census you know the probable birthyears of Nicolo and Rosa and in LDS you can see all records

Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'm aware of the listings in the Louisiana records. That's how I obtained their death records and the birth records of the children. And the research on World Trees is mine.

I'm not sure I've seen the 1870 census, so thanks for that. However, again, it just says "Italy" with no indication of the actual town. As for the Ustica connection, I have not yet gone through the films from Ustica since it is only a hunch based on the occurence of the surnames. I'm hoping to find something more concrete before I start ordering films. However, with the approximate birth dates, at least now I can limit the search somewhat.

Regarding death and burials, I have the death record for Rosa Manfre, but it doesn't state the cemetery of place of birth (again, just Italy). I still don't have anything on the death of Nicolo Tarantino, but I'm hoping to get to the New Orleans Public Library next week to find both obituaries.

I haven't tried naturalizations yet. What are the odds that they were naturalized that far back? As for ships manifests, I did scan through the New Orleans lists a couple of years ago and didn't find anything. But I should look again.

If I can return the favors for anyone, my areas of expertise are early New Orleans and Cefalu and Villafrati in Sicily. Thanks again everyone.

I believe we are related. My great grandma other was Thelma Catherine Tarantino Schwehm. I’m just getting into searching my family history and came across this post.
