Marinos from Carlentini, Sicily to Nebraska, USA

Post by atillman »

I'm researching the Marino surname. My grandfather was Andrew Carl Marino, b. January 7, 1887 in Carlentini, Sicily. He immigrated to the US around 1906 and settled in Omaha, Nebraska. His wife was Qucetta/Concetta Cromatto(?), who he brought to the US in 1914, along with her two brothers, Rosario and Sam. After Qucetta's death (prior to 1930), he returned to Sicily and married Sarah (last name unknown). THey returned to Nebraska, and had a son, Frank (my father). Does anyone recognize grandpa Andrew Carl Marino?

There is the name Cammarota associated with the town of Carlentini that might be the correct spelling...

There was a Lucia Anzalone, age 25, and two children, Giuseppe Cammarota age 5 and Carmelo? Cammarota age 3, arriving in Ellis Island Sept 26, 1912 to meet her husband, Salvatore (Sam) in Omaha. Not sure if this is the brother, but probably a relative. Seems to reinforce the notion that the names is spelled Cammarota or similar variation....

I spoke to your father not to long ago. He is the owner of a grocery store in Omaha. This was originally owned by your grandfather who's name was Andrea. He also used the name Henry, but I think that this was to avoid the draft. I wanted to know from your father if he knew or was related to another Marino family who lived in that same area, but I there was no relationship to any other family.

I've been looking at the 1910 Ship manifest and the 1920 Census. Assuming they're both correct, Andrew who was single came to Omaha to join a cousin Rosario Granato (looks like an "o" rather than an "i"). On the 1920 census the surname for brother-in-laws Rosario and Sam could be Granato. Both brothers state they did not know their year of immigration which is strange. If they in fact came to the US with their sister, it's hard to believe no one in the household near their immigration year.

In checking the WWI Draft Registration cards found an Alfie Granato in Omaha who gave nearest relative as Rosa Granato in Carlentini. Also found ship manifest for Alfio and Salvatore (Sam?) on 30 April 1913 coming to Omaha to join brother Rosario.

Thanks Biff83, I hope that he comes to see this, however, I am not so much interested in his family, but what they might know. Anyway, his wife is Pauline? I do believe it is Paulina Marino SS#508-12-8157, but not sure how this is a Concetta or Sarah? Also, on the 1930 census there is no Nancy, so she also may have died (with her mother)?

Funeral services for longtime Omaha grocer Andrew ""Andy'' Marino were held at St. Frances Cabrini Church Monday. Marino, 98, died June 13 of respiratory arrest at the Florence Home, where he had lived since 1983. Born in Sicily in 1887, Marino came to Omaha at age 19. He founded Marino Grocery, 1716 S. 13th St., in 1919. The business still sells Italian and Greek foods to customers from Omaha and the surrounding area.
Survivors include wife, Pauline; son Frank T. Marino, a partner in the grocery; and daughters Mrs. Thomas J. Nastase and Mrs. Sam Garofolo, all of Omaha; 10 grandchildren, 26 greatgrandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren.[/align]

Hello! Yes I think we are related! I read your post fast, I was looking up some info for my mother and ran across this.
My grandmother was Sara Ann Marino, daughter of Carl (Carmella) and Louis (Lucia) also maiden name Marino. Carl was my Great Grandfather who was born 12-20-1901 in Lentini Italy.
Now....my maternal great Great grandparents were:
Cirino Cresci and Concetta Romano Crisci 12-18-1857 Both were born in Carlenti and Lentini which are very close in proximity.

My Paternal GG Grandparents were
Sara Socco Marino from Lentini Italy (died approx in 1945 from a disease after WW2) and Luiigi Marino

If are talking about the same "Carl" Marino, my Great Grandfather and Grandmother had 4 total children
Lewis Marino born Omaha 1925
Frank Marino born Omaha 1930
Sara Ann Marino (Sallie was her nickname who is my grandmother) born 1933
Nino Marino born in Omaha 1949

This would be great and very interesting if we are related!!
Salute
