Help with Ellis Island record

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Help with Ellis Island record

Post by raffygen »

Hello,

what does it mean when a name in the passenger list is crossed with a line all over the page?

I find my great aunt on the list but her name is crossed out.
I attached the picture.

Thanks,
Raffy

Hi raffygen,

It could mean several things.

She may not have been on board or may have been detained for some reason. If she need board a ship then her name will be on another manifest.

If you post her info we can look it up for you. Theres a great site which tells all about manifest markings. I book marked it but have too many programs open to get to it right now. I'll try and link it for.

Raffy,

Don't worry, just post the name and any info from the text file from ellis if you can. Otherwise just give us the name of the person and arrival date...I'll find it. But do it quick...am searching frantically for my husbands sledgehammer right now to do it this computer...

It looks like they didn't board just as Nuccia mentioned...

Did they end up in South America?

Your great aunt is listed as

Thanks to you all. We do not know if they ended up in South America or stayed in Italy. Her brother emigrated to the US.

I need some other help with the ellis island records.
I am trying to read the information about
First Name: Antonino
Last Name: D'Alio
Ethnicity: Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Nicosia, Catania
Date of Arrival: Oct 16, 1908
Age at Arrival: 41y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Oceania
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Manifest Line Number: 0021

I am trying to understand when he went to the us for the first time and how long he stayed. I think he said 3 years but it should not be true. I cannot decifer the year he first came.
Any help is very appreciated!!!!

Raffy..

It says 1908 for 3 years...strange! Perhaps they meant he was there 3 years earlier and then left in the early part of 1908 and then returned again on this voyage??? Speculation only.

Have you placed him on a census yet...? If so what does it say just out of curiousity?

Nuccia it is quite a mistery at this point.

His brother (reported as D'aio Nicolo' a couple of line before) is the one that we know really emigrated to the us. His first trip was in 1904.
I cannot understand Nicolo' information neither. There is a correction on his info an I cannot read it clearly.

Do you think they could have tried to "exchage" identity between brothers?

According to family history Antonino should have never been in the US before the 1908 trip.

Plus from Italian records we know he was married in 1897 and now he is reporting he is single....to many strange info in this record!!!

What do you think?

This is a mystery...I need to finish a few other things this evening but I'll have a look through the census info and things and see what, if anything I can come up with but most likely they just got the info mixed up between the two brothers.

We will see....

Raffy, it says Nicola was in the US for 13 years....

He was traveling with his wife, Carmelina Falco and their son, Carmelino (who was born in the US) going to see her father Michele.

Heres Nicola's draft card registration info:
