Are you looking for an Italian surname? Do you need more information about your family heritage?
This is the right place to start your genealogy search.
I am trying to find out any info on Pasquale and Jennie Santanello. Their name was changed sometime after coming to US. They are supposed to be from Naples. According to the 1930 census he came over to US in 1905 and her in 1907. Both are said to have come into Ellis Island but that website has come up empty. Does Italy have census records that are available to Americans?
From what I suspect is that they entered the USA at a port other than NYC (ellisisland) and so to get this show on the road you need to be made aware so we can talk easily. There are only 18 Santanello in Italy and none are in the southern part of Italy and there are 230 Santinello with only one in southern Italy in the naples area on the nearby Island of Ischia. That person is named Pietro Santinello. In order to trace the entry of your people Pasquale and"Jennie" (whats the chirstiasn name?) you need to know "Jennis'e" maiden name since in Italy women do not lose their identity and only the children take on the fathers name. her entry will be listed in her maiden name not Santinello (for the moment lets use Santinello). Go to www.genealogylookups.com/narchives.htm for form 81 which you will send to USArchives at NARA for passenger arrivals records. When you say they come from Naples, I immediately suspect that they may come from ther province of Naples rather than the city of Naples. The province of Naples includes towns and villages with different names and in Italy ALL records are in the town of origin. Without the town of origin little can be accomp[lished. You don't say if they are living or dead or what your relationship is to them so if you will just do what we discussed and then get back to me with as much information as you can after you submit the form 81. If they are deceased we go one way. if they are living we go another way. I need to know. Peter
Thanks for the reply. Pasquale (Patsy) and Jennie were my g-grandparents. They're original names were Santanello. I do not know the given name. According to her death certificate she was Jennie and has always been. It may be her given name. Her maiden name was Cardaropoli. I do not know the town of origin. All everyone ever said was they were from Naples. She died in 1943 and he died in 1952.
Thank you soi now we can start if your stillinterested. To do the research we have to start at the end and work backwards to send in the form 81 for both "jennie" Cardaropoli and another for Pasquale Santaniello and aka (also known as ) Santinello. Next did they ever become naturalized UScitizens? Did they ever travel to Italy before world war 11 after they were here for a while. Do you know what their sociual security numbers were? That would be good since all the information will be with social security. If there is no other way you can write to Social Security and you may have to pay a fee of about $30.00 for a copy of their original applicaiton which has all the vital data. Did you go thru any papers, photos with date stamps or names printed on the photos or envelopes that may be in the old cigar boxes. Peter
Dear Whatever your name is: English is the second language in Italy and is taught in the schools. Why don't you write a very simple letter in english.....My Name is.... My grandfather's name was. His wife's name was. We only know he came from Naples. We think he may be related to you because his name is Santinello... just simple english. Local kids will help him out. The man to write to is the ONLY Santinello in the whole Naples Province on the Island of Ischia. so write to:
Pietro Santinello
Comune di Ischia, postale 80077
Via Delle Terme
Provincia Napoli, Campania region, Italy
Include a self addressed envelope with a dollar inside for stamps to encourage a reply. If you wish you may vcall him at his home on ischia at 081-993815. The operator here in the USA will give you the country and area code for Ischia. Peter
Ptimber,
I have sent away for the form. As far as I know they were never naturalized. They or at least he had to have filed for a Declaration of Intent because he owned a farm in Agawam, MA. Didn't you have to do that before you bought land? No one has any kind of paperwork or photos that they are willing to share with me. The only surviving daughter just keeps telling me "Honey, their dead". My sister is in the progress of working on her to get info. I will try to get the social security info as soon as I can. I will write to the man today
I did send off for the form. My mom just told me last night that she remembered that they were from the town that had the eruption in the 1970's I believe, so I thought I'd ask around a bit.
I got the form from NARA and I have a question. The form for my grandmother, she was married when she came over, separately from my grandfather, do I use her married name or her maiden name? He came over in 1905 her in 1907.
Italian women never lose their identity. Only her children assume the fathers last name. She assumed her fathers last name and that stays with her until she dies for all offical documents. Peter
