Declaration Of Intent
Declaration Of Intent
How do I find my grandfather's D.O.I.? He claims he was natulralized in 1904. My grandfather lived in NY at the time in question and I believe that I tried all the resources there. I'd like to know if ther is a National Data Bank to help me.
Re: Declaration Of Intent
Info on naturalization in Connecticut, I assume this is the area of interest, since you didn't state otherwise........

You may want to try contacting NARA in New York to request a search of Federal records. (Varick Street; I forget the number). Their website:

Re: Declaration Of Intent
I thought naturalizations didn`t start till 1906 at the federal level, and so wouldn`t that mean that the record would be in the local court, and not in a federal record? I believe the local supreme court or the district court would have the record.
Does this sound right?

Re: Declaration Of Intent
You're correct....pre-1906 naturalizations are at the local level, so you need to know where in NY your ancestor was living at the time he filed his D.O.I.
Some are also at the New York State Archives>

Perhaps if you provide his information: name, birth year, wife's name & year of birth, & the same for their children, we can locate the family on census records in NY.

Nonna J is correct...... ...but sometimes, if you can't find them at one level, try the other. You did not find this date on source material, but as recollection, and we all know.....memories can fade.

Prior to 1906 naturalizations could happen at ANY court, I believe. Federal, State, Municipal.
Nara in NY is very good with their e-mails. I heard back from them quickly. They were also very accomodating by telephone and can give you the specific county clerk to ask for the record, as well. You can order the serach via email, telephone, fax, etc.
