Gigi / Giggie

Post by DMD-Boston »

Greetings:

Researching my mother's Italian side. From a birth certificate of my grandmother:
Antonia Gigi
Born: Aug 22, 1901 East Boston, MA, USA
Died: May 27 1954 San Francisco, CA, USA
Father: Michele Gigi Italy, Laborer
Mother: Maria Ruciu Italy

We have uncertified information for Antonia's father's Declaration of Intention (Form 2203) in 1914, but his name is spelled Michael Giggie. Born in Naples, Italy, May 17, 1862 (Living in Everett, MA, USA in 1914). Immigrated to USA (no vessel name) arriving in NY on April 23, 1886. His last residence was listed as Avellino, Italy. Looking for actual copy of this form.

I have census info from 1930 for Joseph A Giggie (one of Michael's sons), as well as 2 WWII US Army Enlistment Records (Albert L and James V) and 1 WWI Draft Registration Card (Joseph Antonio) - all from same family.

I found city directories from 1912, 14, 16, 18, & 20 - all for Michael Giggie.

Looking back to ITALY for more info on the Gigi and Ruciu lines.

Thanks.

Dear DMD-Boston,
you can make some steps.
Since you say Michele was born in Naples write a request in italian to have his birth certificate (estratto dell'atto di nascita) to

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
c.a. Sig. BARRILE
Via dell'Epomeo
Parco Quadrifoglio
80126 Napoli
Italy

In the birth certificate you find name, right date of birth, name of parents.
Add to your request a self-addressed envelope + an international reply coupon

If you receive a negative answer, you can try to get his military record (foglio matricolare) or his military draft card (lista di leva) to Archivio di Stato di Napoli
On this documents you find his right date and place of birth (if he was born in the province of Naples)
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

HI, I understand that in Declaration of Intention of Michele, it are the arrival date in NY : April 23, 1886;
but it is only a:
Michele Giggi
Occupation Farmer
Age 17
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 4 Apr 1888
Origin Italy
Port Naples
Last Residence S.domenico
Destination USA
Plan Unknown
Ship Comorin
Passage Unknown

and perhaps could be your ancestor, because the birthyear is very probable.....

however in the same travel it was also:

Generose* Giggi
Occupation Farmer
Age 38
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 4 Apr 1888
Origin Italy
Port Naples
Last Residence S.domenico Destination USA
Plan Unknown
Ship Comorin
Passage Unknown

* Generoso

I believe that the last place S. Domenico it could be Chiusano San Domenico in Avellino province...
your suggestions?

Hi DMD,

Our member, Riccardo :) , has given you the information on where to write if Michele was born in Naples, but you may also want to write to "last residence" (supplied by suanj :) from manifest) to see if this was where he was born......Here is that information.

http://en.comuni-italiani.it/064/028/index.html

The same applies to the military record/draft card. Provide the parents names as supplied by Valarie :) (from marriage record) & also request from archive in the province of Avellino.

http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/S ... VELLINO%22

It's best to have a US document that verifies the town of origin.

Once you determine town of origin, we can look into available records from the LDS Church (Mormons).

Hope this helps & nice teamwork everyone :!: :) :) :)

Hello,
I would like to let you know that last year, during june, I contacted the lady in charge of Archivio di Stato di Napoli, requesting a military record.
She told me that the building where all these records are saved is closed and nobody is allowed to get into it because it is very damaged, it is dangerous because brick of wall may fall down and hurt anyone.
She also told me that the Government had no money at the moment to fix the building, because it was too expensive.
A friend of mine just told me that they are going to think about fixing it, maybe because there are many requests for military records...
Good luck for you research
bye Riccardo

So you may not get anything from the Napoli achrive.

Hi There,

Here is another ship's manifest for Michele Giggi. This one the year of birth is closer to the 1862 date that was given in the first post.

I'm sure someone will post the record for you. Also, this manifest states he was from Naples. However, everyone that is listed is listed with the "general region" (example: Cosenza, Naples, Salerno, etc. no specific town, just generalization).

Hope this helps,
Trish

Hi Again,

If you type the name Giggi in Ellis Island, you get the following listed below.

Name - Town of Origin - Year of Arrival - Age at Arrival - Year of Birth
Giggi,Arcangiola fu Carmine - 1896 - 55 - 1841
Giggi,Carmine - 1901 - 16 - 1885
Giggi,Constantino - Sarus, Italy - 1916 - 34 - 1882
Giggi,Costantino - Sarno, Salerno - 1913 - 32 - 1881
Giggi,Generos fu Gen'ia - 1896 - 47 - 1849
Giggi,Raffaele - Sarno, Salerno - 1910 - 23 - 1887

The town that is mentioned is Sarno which is located in Salerno.

And just a quick note:
The Provinces of Campania Region are:
Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, Naples, and Salerno

...........so the town of Sarno could be a good clue.

Here is the address if you want to write to see IF there is a chance that your ancestors are from this town.

Ufficio Stato Civile
Comune di Sarno
Via IV Novembre
84087 Sarno SA
ITALY

Here is the official web site of the town

Here is a link from ICC that will help you translate your letter into Italian.

Remember, this is only a possibility and to give you some clues. Do you know of any of Michele's younger siblings that might have come over? You could try to find their naturaliztion records.

I hope some of this helps.
