How can I obtain my Great Grandfathers birth certificate.

Post by JIMMYSAL »

His name is Gelsomino Solimeo, born on June 4, 1886 in Campagna, Salerno. I don't know the names of his parents. I am not sure if the town is accurate. I found it listed on his declaration of intention and WW2 registreation card. He did'nt get married and have children until he immigrated to the US. I am also having trouble locating his ship manifest. He left from naples on May 28, 1904 and arrived in NY on June 18, 1904 on the ship Citta di Milano.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :D Thank You :D

You mentioned he married in the states, did you get census records for them. What state did they live in, wifes name, children etc.

Also, did he travel alone coming here, if he was born in 1886 and arrived in 1904 chances are he came with an adult. Whom did he travel with. I checked for the ship and date and found some Solimeos, but not with the 1st name given.

Where did you get his arrival date if you couldnt get the ship manifest?
Also, what name did he use in the states???

I have family from Monte San Giacomo, Salerno. My relative ordered films from Salerno towns and we got alot of births, marriages, deaths etc.
Also wrote to commune and received some Family Situation sheets.
They are oretty good at sending you stuff. There is a post here somewhere on how to go about doing this in detail.

If you give some more info, I am sure someone could help you!!!

Ally :D

I did check the census records at ancestry.com, but had no luck. He married on April 19, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His wife's maiden name is Mary DeVito, also born in Campagna according to his declaration of intention. They resided in Philadelphia untill their deaths. They had 8 children Catherine, Anna, James, Charles, Anthony, Albert, Joseph, and Louis. They also had two children who died in a fire at a young age.

I believe he traveled alone. I got all his arrival and departure info from his declaration of intention. When he came to the states he used the name James.

Hi VJ,
That looks like its him. I didnt even know he had a brother Giuseppe. He must have written the wrong info on his declaration of intention. Could you try finding his wifes manifest. Her name is Maria or Mary DeVito born on 02/18/1889 in Campagna. I think she came a few years later, but I'm not sure.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
