Help finding my families history in lipari

Post by sokser »

I am trying to compose my family history and have reached an obstacle that I havn't been able to overcome and I hope that someone could help me out. I am trying to find out the exact details of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother along with obtaining copies of their vital records from Italy. I know that my great-grandfather went by the name of Joseph Zino in America. However his real name was apparently Giuseppe Zino (however their are rumors and conflicting documents that say the name may have been Zuno or Ziino). He was from the main island of Lipari and was born some time in between 1870 and 1872. He made about three trips (may not be accurate) to America between the 1890's and ~1901. He married a woman who went by the name celestina maria francesca paterno. Other names she was known by was mary zino (as listed on her death certificate in America), francesca paterno, maria francesca celestina paterno. According to her death certificate she was born on August 8th, 1880 (may be 1881, according to a 1930's census record). I believe she was born in Lipari too. They were married between the late 1890's and 1901.

I would like to find out the specifics on who exactly they are, their dates or birth, and their date of marriage along with obtain official copies of these documents. Does anyone know how I can go about finding out this information? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

I saw the 1920 Census records but the problem was that there was never a josephina, angelina or benjamin.

Also I know the giuseppe zino died in 1933 in an elevator accident. The building was sued and "travelers insurance company" paid insurance money to my maria. They were both buried in the same grave site in St. Johns cemetery in Queens.

Giuseppe Zino owned land in Tom's River in NJ but it had owed taxes on it. He aquired this land in the late 1900's.

The 1930's census record has been confirmed and is for my family.

Once again thank you so much for your help.

Do you know of any sites in Italy where I can search records online?

I'm not following here..........The posted 1920 census, does have Angelina, Josephine (Josephina) & Benjamin.

Also I know the giuseppe zino died in 1933 in an elevator accident. The building was sued and "travelers insurance company" paid insurance money to my maria. They were both buried in the same grave site in St. Johns cemetery in Queens.

You can check for his death records here. I only came up with a Angelo Zino age 63 (b. 1870) who died in 1933.

Giuseppe Zino owned land in Tom's River in NJ but it had owed taxes on it. He aquired this land in the late 1900's.

My grandmother has a first cousin (Their mother's were sisters) from Staten Island named Frannie (Frances) Zino. I think she is still alive and would be about 86/87. Her husband is (If I remember right) Joseph Zino also around 86/87 if he is still alive.

Frannie Zino's mother would have been a Crocefissa (or Sophia) Marciano by birth and a native of Carini Sicily.

Any connection?

Jim :)

If you match the Brides Certificate#399 (Kings) for the 1/11/1903 marraige of Maria Paterno to the Groom Certificate#399 (Kings) for 1/11/1903 it gives the groom as Vito Valvaro.

Hello... your great-grandfather and my grandfather, John Moretti (misspelled as Moretto in the article), may have encountered each other under less than favorable circumstances in 1927. Email me at moretti@mac.com and I'll send you an article from the NY Times as a PDF which I just purchased from their archives. Good luck in your search!
