Need help with corollo and magavaro

Post by angeltwin87 »

Can anyone help me find any information on the surnames corollo and magavaro? I'm not sure on the magavaro spelling. My great grandparents immigrated to the US and I can't find anything. Their names were Frank Corollo and Santa (possibly short for Santina) Magavaro.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to ItalianGenealogy!!
Can you provide the names of their children and the state/city in which they lived? Do you know the year of their births and deaths? No detail to small to help locate the right family and records.
Have you obtained any US documents?

I believe this to be the correct family...... :)

Found an obituary, I have deleted part of it for privacy issues.....

Antoinette Jeanette "Toni" Wieser

April 21, 1917 - Dec. 22, 2004

Antoinette "Toni" Jeanette Wieser, 87, died Wednesday after a brief illness. Born in Trinidad, Colo., Mrs. Wieser was a resident of Vallejo.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Sylvester Henry Wieser; her parents, Frank Corollo and Santa Magarro; her sisters, Anna Colombo, Marie Frabizio and Margaret Atchison; and her brothers, Mario Corollo and Joseph Corollo.

However, this death record indicated yet another spelling for the mothers surname:

California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name: Mario Frank Corollo
Sex: MALE
Birth Date: 31 Aug 1914
Birthplace: Colorado
Death Date: 5 Aug 1981
Death Place: Los Angeles

I haven't seen too many town sites which include a genealogy forum but Trinidad Colorado is one of them. The site also includes a lot of historical information on Trinidad and a section on Aguilar as well.

Looks like your great grandfather's family would have arrived in Las Animas county as the coal miners' strike of 1913-1914 started.

Wow! How did you all find all this information so quickly? This is great, thank you! It is interesting, because some of the things don't match up, but mostly right on. They did move to Colorado, and my great grandfather was a coal miner. The children in my grandma's family were Anna, Mary, Margret, Mario, Antoinette, Joseph, and Joanie. This goes with some of these documents, and conflicts with some others. There are so many spellings of Corollo here, but I know this is the one my grandma used. As for Mogavero, I think it must be this spelling after looking at all these documents.
Lets see, other details. I don't know any birth or death years. I know that Santa's father was a pharmacist in Italy. I also know that they lived in Palermo, which is were the ship manifest suanj posted says they sailed from. I have actually seen the obituary you posted wldspirit, as Tony was my Grandma. I am working on finding the hard copy of the ship manifest. I've seen it before, but that was years ago.
Since you all seem to be so awesome at this, can you give me any tips? Also, is there a way I can view these census documents online?
Thank you all so much again! I am so excited! I'm going to look into those sites you posted Biff, thanks!
