The first one is of my nonno obviously in a official type of navy photo shoot

Number 2 has an interesting story behind it.. That's my nonno on the right, in the middle is his best friend.
The photo was taken the day before his friend transferred to another ship which they were upset about being split up..
a couple of weeks later, the brits attaked, and he got word he was killed in action..

Nonno's ship the "Grecale" was disabled in battle and he was taken as a POW to the united states.
He recals that in the United states, as a POW he had the time of his life! and that the US Military used to let them sneak out to the movies, and even bring girls back to base as is evident in picture number 3. (that's him far right!)

Theres some more pictures of a great aunts funeral, photos were taken as the 2 sons were in Australia and could not attend the funeral

In the last picture posted, if anyone could deciper the writing on the side of the street it would be appreciated.

Also , I know it's a long shot but if anyone could identify the church or the graveyard it might help me with my research (somewhere in provincia di Giarre Sicilia.

Also, anyone know where I cna find POW records for WW2? - name is Alfio Previtera

Also anyone know where I can find WW1 records for Sebastiano Previtera ?

Also anyone know where I can find ships pictures/history/serviceman records for the "Grecale" (it means the northern wind translated"

Hope you enjoy these photos, many more where these came from :)

Lots of information on the Italian Royal Navy in WWII. An excellent resource.
La Regia Marina

Information on a documentary film on Italian POWs in the US.
Prisoners in Paradise

To obtain personnel files for former Italian POWs, please write to:
Ten. Col. Tortora
Ministero della Difesa
via Mattia Battistini, 113, 7 Piano
00167 Roma
Italy

I also suggest that you write to his local military tribunal office (for his town of birth) to acquire his complete military record (with a gap from his capture to his re-patriation.) For each of the above, you'll need to send a letter of authorization along with a copy of your ID to show relationship.

To msebastian10--

How did you manage to put the pictures directly into your post? I'm the one who said it wasn't possible--obviously I was wrong. How did you do it?

Many thanks in advance for educating me! Peggy M
