need help finding manifest

Post by louis41 »

Hi All!
Trying to find great aunt's manifest.

Luisia Maria Ianelli born Berceto Italy 12 Aug 1854. Found in 1900 census in Phila. Enumeration dist 52, sheet no 5B, lines 91 & 92, under married name Perolli, husband Felicia born 1856. She came to US in 1889 according to census and it also indicates they had been married 18 years in 1900, so manifest should have been under married name. I tried Ancestry.com in every name combination I could think of without finding them. Will appreciate some help.

Thanks,

Louis

 Hi Louis,

unfortunately my searches are useless.... no manifest found
But I've noticed that the family was:

Felice/Felix/Phillip Perolli/Pirolli born 1856 Italy
Louise wife born 1854 Italy
Palma daughter born 1891 Pennsylvania
Arcangelo son born 1897 Pennsylvania
Louis/Luigi/Lewis son born August 14, 1898 Pennsylvania (birth date from the WWI Draft card)

Felice's mother: Donata Perolli/Pirolli born De Meo in 1831 Italy

I think that the correct surname of Luisa was Janelli (founded immigrant from Berceto with this same surname)

Think that the surname of Palma's husband was not Rancioni as the manifest of 1910 Census but probably Rongione

Image

I've no experience with the origin and the distribution of the surnames in Italy but from a quickly look I can say that probably Janelli is from the North of Italy (found lots of immigrant from Berceto with this same surname. Parma Province) but surnames as Pirollo, Di Meo, Rongione are form the center/south.... I've found lots of Pirollo coming from Pozzilli (Isernia Province- Region Molise) or from Acquafondata, Casalcassinese (Frosinone Province- Region Lazio)
In this forum there are so many members with great experience (especially Suanj with question regarding italians surnames) so I hope that they help better than me!
Ciao!

Thanks for trying. I already have all of the census reports as I subscribe to Ancestry.com and have searched there for months.

The correct spelling of her maiden name is Ianelli as that is my name and the name of my father, grand father, ggfather and gggrandfather and I have her birth certificate along with all birth certs for all of the males mentioned, so I am sure of the correct spelling. That doesn't help if she came over after she was married as it appears she did.

Our name is however often misspelled as Janelli, Jamelli, Yamelli, Yanelli, Fanelli or Iannelli and I have looked for all of those possibilities. As a mater of fact my ggrandfather had his name spelled Jamelli on his manifest and his wife who arrived the year after him, had her name spelled Yamelli.

I will keep searching for the manifest, but will appreciate anyone who can find it.

Thanks again,

Lou Ianelli

Hi Louis,

Have you tried the Steve Morse search pages?
http://stevemorse.org/index.html

You need a paid subscription to ancestry.com but you said you have one.

BTW, my GM, though married & with a 6 year old child, travelled under her maiden name. I eventually found her on the ship manifest by searching for birthplace, Sta*, since I knew her exact date of birth. Her maiden name was misspelled and her first name was illegible (to the transcriber) though it was clear on the manifest if you already knew what it was.

Good luck, Peg

Rarely will you find a woman listed on the manifest with their married name......Italian women keep their surnames in Italy and are found under the maiden name. Once in America they then adopt the American custom of taking their husbands surname.
