Favret from Northern Italy

I'm hoping someone can help me with this research.

My great grandparents, Giobata (Tita) Favret and Catina Babuin were both adopted. How difficult would it be to obtain birth/adoption certificates for both?

I'm trying to work on my tree and have run into a brick wall because of this. My aunts (grandchildren) of them, don't even know their birth/death dates.

Based on my calculations, they were probably born in the mid 1800's. Only thing I know is that they both died in Bannia PN Italy (Region of Fiume Veneto)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Favret and welcome to the forum. Just a bit of information.
The province of Pordenone was created in 1968 from portions of the province of Udine.

I checked a few manifests (early 1900's) and the town was listed ast Bania (Bannia) province of Udine and nationality was listed as Italian. Looks like it was part of Austria/Italy.

Here are some microfilms you can order from the LDS church. The first links are from early to mid 1800's for church and civil records and the last couple are of the province of Udine (which is what you would need - I believe) and covers early 1800's through early 1900's.

You will need to find a Family History Center (FHC) near you, go in and order the microfilms you would like to view. The cost is about $5.50 USD per film and it takes 2 to 4 weeks to receive.

Thanks Elizabeth...I've located an FHC near me.

I don't have any documentation to post here. Although I have over 700 names in my genealogical database, they are all from my mother's good memory.

Did all your relatives immigrate to Canada? Are you just looking for Italian records, or for Canadian ones as well?

I'm looking for old Italian Records....I can only go as far back as grandparents.......only info I have on great grandparents are names and that's about it.

So my database consists of 736 names, from grandparents to latest born to date.

Giobata and Catina were both adopted and have no idea what their surnames were....my mother says that back in those days it was common practice to adopt babies, in order to receive financial aid from the government.

Bannia became part of Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
If you ask the certicate "estratto atto di morte", inside will be written the place of birth.
The town hall to make reference is Fiume Veneto.

P.s.: try to search Babbuin too (double B)

Hi Favret,

I believe if they died in Italy their death records contain all their info - birth year, where born etc. but I'm not 100% sure on that. I will send a PM to another memeber on the forum that is a genealogist and lives in Italy - I'll ask them to look at your thread and let you know what information you might gain by requesting their death certificates. There's a 7 hour difference in time so you may not get a response until tomorrow sometime.

Thanks Elizabeth, I appreciate it....I am driving my mother nuts with a zillion questions on my ancestors, and it's thanks to her good memory that I was able to get this far....it's just too bad that the relatives remaining in Italy have absolutely no interest in this.

Hi

I sent the PM and the response is that I was correct, you need to write to the place of death and it will have the information of years of birth, where and what name born under. I don't know the address you need to write to or how you need to word your request to get all the information so I asked in the PM for correct address and wording.

In addition you should order the microfilms that encompass the years you think they may have been born. Even if they were not legitimate they will still have a recorded birth act and the names they used (Giobata (Tita) Favret and Catina Babuin ) will be on the birth act. You just have to look. The name of the child will show up on the left or right hand side of the document in large letters so just look for the first names Giobat (Tita) and Catina and you will find.

If you think they were born mid 1800's I would start my films with the years 1840 or 1835 through 1890. The reason I say this - in my family (I'll use my grandfather as an example) my grandpa was born in 1889, his mother was born in 1848 and his father was born in 1838 so they were in their 40's and 50's when he was born. Just give yourself a wide range of years to look through to find the birth acts.

As for the living relatives in Italy, keep trying with different members of the family. You may find one that is willing to help you. Never give up.
